The Adaptive Cruise Control Fails to engage immediately after being set and causes the vehicle to slow for as much as a few seconds before it engages and then applies heavy throttle to catch up to the set speed. If one knows about the problem one can continue to press on the accelerator pedal until the electronics seem to get things back under control. The system works fine after that. This problem occurs when there is nothing in front of the car to tell the system to slow the car.
With all the added safety features that Toyota brags about, this is a very troubling problem with this car. Like so many of the features on this car this is one more distraction from watching the road. It also creates an issue when your car slows in traffic without showing brake lights to alert the drivers following behind.
I brought this problem up at my local Toyota service department while getting the 6 month/5000-mile checkup and I told the service writer that I wanted the problem noted and put into the vehicle's record. The service writer lied to me and said he had done it, when I asked him directly if he had. I called the service department two days later and asked to hear what was in the service records for my car and as I had suspected there was nothing there. The person that I then spoke to on the phone sent me a text with a pic of the complaint that he then did put in the record.
The malfunction is a reoccurring problem, but I am reluctant to put my car into their hands at this point. I have a well-founded distrust of dealerships and they just reinforced my opinion of them with the lie that I was told. I want to monitor the issue with the car for a while longer while I still have plenty of warranty time and miles to deal with it if I must.
