The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. While driving approximately 45-50 mph he heard a loud noise and the left rear spring broke which caused the vehicle to stop immediately. He engaged the accelerator pedal and heard another loud noise and coasted the vehicle into a parking lot. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The dealer advised him that it would be 3 months before they could repair his vehicle because of the back log of recalls. The dealer performed the recall work on his vehicle on August 23, 2010; recall 09V444000, structure: Frame and members:underbody shields. As he was driving from the dealership he engaged the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor; he informed the service manager of the failure. The service manager advised the technicians to clean, adjust the rear brakes and relieve some tension on the parking brake cable. The following day the dealer advised him that the transmission was failing and needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the dealer waiting for the parts to be available. The failure mileage was 102,168 and the current mileage was 102,192.
8/3/2009 - steering rack lost all fluid while driving on a highway. Able to maintain control, brought to mechanic who replaced steering rack. 09/08/2009 - front brake lines corroded thru and lost all brake fluid while driving, brought to mechanic who replaced front and rear brake lines as all required replacement. 09/11/2009 - shift cable failed (corrosion) - able to get off the road and towed to mechanic. Frame and underbody of this truck have excessive corrosion which led to these failures. The integrity and safety of this vehicle is questionable.
At 78,000 miles the transmission began making a noise and vibration that upon first impression sounded and felt like running into a pothole. The truck would also, intermittently fail to go into reverse gear. After dropping the transmission pan it was determined that the pan had several clumps of metal shavings and the transmission has to be replaced. This is an egregious mechanical failure on a vehicle with low mileage and well maintained.
Vehicle would stutter or jerk occasionally over a three week period of time/approx 500 miles of driving. While turning into driveway vehicle shut down and would not shift out of drive. Torque converter was locked up requiring a new transmission.
At 80,000 miles my transmission needs to be replaced. I have never abused this vehicle in any form and feel that Toyota should reimburse the many thousands of owners who seem to be having the same problems with this model. For the amount of money these vehicles cost it only seems fair that Toyota should be forced to stand behind their products.

The transmission occasionally made a clunking noise and felt like the tire hit a small pothole in the road when shifting into overdrive. This started around 80,000 miles. I had the transmission fluid changed and the transmission pan dropped. The pan magnets had mostly small metal shavings but also a few larger pieces around 1/4" long. Now at 85,000 miles the transmission makes a very loud thud noise and shakes the truck violently every time it shifts into overdrive. I am forced to keep the truck in 3rd gear until I reach the freeway and then must press the O/D switch to shift into 4th gear/overdrive. My mechanic will be replacing the transmission next week as he has been on vacation. I cannot believe that the transmission must be replaced at only 85,000 miles! I am a careful driver and conscientious about maintenance.
2000 Toyota Tundra 2wd 4.7L V8 automatic SR5 extended cab 1. transmission noise and transmission "bump" when starting out from stop. It occurred from approx 10,000mi (currently 93,000 mi) 2. eventual complete failure of the defective transmission overdrive gear and transmission lockup, leading to skid and near crash. 3. Toyota service packed grease in U joint. Only softens bump and noise for 100mi then back to same problems. Repair estimated at $5000+.
My Toyota Tundra's planetary gear exploded within the transmission and disable the vehicle completely. The transmission was in otherwise perfect condition. It left me strand on 2 separate occasions without any pre-notice that the transmission was having any issues.
The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. While driving 55 mph, the gear shift indicator slipped out of gear and into neutral. The mechanic stated that the transmission failed. As of October 9, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The contact felt that the transmission failed prematurely. The current and failure mileages were 108,000. Updated 10/24/07.
I bought my truck and about three weeks ago I was driving along when it died. Anytime I came to a full stop it died. Turns out it's the transmission and a lot of other people have had the same problem. Toyota refuses to issue a recall on their planetary gear even though it malfunctions. This failure caused my truck to stop in a busy intersection and almost killed me.
The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. While driving 5 mph, the vehicle stopped accelerating. The dealer stated that the shift solenoid could be the cause of failure. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the overdrive gear cluster was not working properly. As of June 27, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage is 145,000 and failure mileage was 144,000.
Automatic transmission transmission on the Tundra truck is a known problem, experienced by thousands of Tundra owners across the country, and yet Toyota fails to admit the problem and help owners with the cost of repair. The transmission on my 2000 Tundra needs to be replaced due to abrupt gear shifting which cause the truck to lunge forward. I've complained to Toyota and their answer was " your truck is out of warranty". I've been a Toyota owner for 15 years, but after this experience I will not buy another Toyota.
2000 Toyota Tundra 65,000 miles. Out of warranty. The orbital gear in the transmission blew up. This gear has been discontinued by Toyota, and replaced with a more heavy duty gear. This is a defect of the transmission. Many Tundra owners across the country are having the same problem. Toyota has turned their backs to this problem. This is a $3000 repair job.
While driving 10 to 15 miles an hour drivetrain locks up and vehicle skids to a stop. Dealer says it is an intermittent problem, and cannot duplicate. They have had the truck for two weeks. It has happened twice on the 19 of September and the 19th of October. From around 5:30 to 6:00 pm. I will drove it on the 19th of November hoping it will happen again. Computer and backup computer checks okay, no metal in any of the drivetrain components. This is a 4X4 SR5 2000 Tundra.
Initial symptom before failure - difficulty putting steering column shifter into forward gears and "clunky" rough shifting from drive gear (3rd) into automatic overdrive. Occurred periodically for 1 week prior to total failure of od. Toyota service department could not identify problem on 2 occasions in this period. Only after total failure and "idiot" light (check engine) came on was Toyota service willing to look internally, only to find metal shavings in the pan.
Consumer was traveling on highway an applied brakes, transmission made a clunking noise. Dealership was aware of problem. Consumer states the vehicle will lunge foward, just enough to hit someone if following a vehicle.
