Driving home from work the car just stopped. EPC light came on. Checked oil and it was down 3 quarts. Towed to dealer. They replaced 2 Control Modules. $2000. That didn't fix the problem. More diagnostics and they said it was timing Chain. Added another $1700. I added a Carbon cleaning because they said the cylinders were dirty. The total bill ended up to be $4,700. Now I'm adding 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles. Oil changes were done regularly and other maintenance too. I have read that timing chains, carbon buildup, and oil burning are common problems with Tiguan. There was also recall on timing chains up to 2016. Figures. Not my year.

Tiguan 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,500 miles

Check engine light came on and EPC light. Because of Covid, I couldn't get an appointment in a timely manner where I could wait while the car was being evaluated. I drive over an hour away to the dealership, so its not convenient to leave it.

This is a known issue but VW is refusing to fix under warranty because my oil change records are from a local small business that has an old system and I had to regenerate my oil change appointments by hand.

They want me to pay 3500 out of pocket just to trade it in. Even with the timing chain replacement, I am not comfortable keeping the car. Those timing chains are supposed to last 120,000 miles and mine failed before I hit 60,000. I may have to get an attorney, and have the car towed to my local mechanic to be fixed at less than half the cost.
