BMW Recalls Over 504,000 Vehicles Due to Electrical Problems
Electrical problem could cause vehicle to completely shut down.

— BMW is recalling certain 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles; 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles.

BMW says the connector for the positive battery cable connector and the terminal on the fuse box may deteriorate. Over time, the connection could break and cause a complete loss of power to the vehicle.

BMW became aware of the problem in July, 2010, as a result of two field cases from the U.S. involving the failure of the electrical system on a 3-Series vehicle when a customer experienced a "no-start" condition after it was parked.

At the end of 2010, additional cases were received from the field pertaining to a "no-start" problem and the number of reports went up further in 2011.

The recall should begin in March, 2013.  BMW dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, although BMW didn’t say what the improved method is.

Owners can all BMW at 800-525-7417.

This is the second BMW recall announced in two days.  Their X-5 SAV was just recalled because of power braking problems.
