CarComplaints.com Notes: Yes, the Honda Civic receives a lot of complaints because so many were sold. And sure, car parts only last so long and things eventually break. But it's never good to see this many transmission complaints, especially when the average mileage at failure is just north of 100,000 miles.

Especially when you consider that it's predecessor also has a nasty history with transmission complaints.

Civic LX 1.6L

The vehicles warranty had long expired but the car had (we no longer have the car) VERY low mileage ( approx 32000 km) We took the vehicle to the local dealer and ask for some customer goodwill to either pay for the struts or the labour after all except for the age the car was practically new. The dealer said ABSOLUTELY NO! Needless to say - won't be looking at Honda! I had a1985 Mazda 626 that had no suspension problems; owned that car for 16 years & I still miss that car.

Civic LX 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 85,000 miles

First the transmission went out at 68,000 miles (see my separate complaint), now the front struts just went bad and seems the rear ones are going out too. I did not bother to go to a honda dealer as I am very sure they will scrape as much as they can from me including my esophagus.

So I got spring compressor form harbor freight for $10, replaced the bumper stops, struts for about $150 total.

Now after having the transmission replaced at 68,000 miles and struts at 85,000 miles I am very convinced and have been convincing all my friends and family not to buy a honda. I will continue to campaign to my last breath to let as many people know my bad experience with honda.

I am so afraid right now of what will happen next and this lemon car has not even reached 100,000 miles.....

Civic EX 1.7

  • Automatic transmission
  • 88,000 miles

Front left strut is blown and makes the car a danger to drive. Just had the throttle body replaced 2 months ago ( $500.00 ) so Im still hurting from that. Replacement struts, with labor will cost at least $400.00 My 99' Civic was so much better than this piece of crap. Will never buy another Honda again.

Civic 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 233,014 miles

First of all I will never buy another Honda. First time the struts went at 60k dealer told me they were made from cheap material I just kept quiet. Now they are toast again but I keep driving.

Current status - front end suspension all shot everything bushings, bearings, ball joints tie rod ends,etc...,upholstery peeling off at door panels, headlight drl not working, dash plastic has cracks, sun visor just fell out in winter, transmission replaced at 260000k,pwr window dead, replaced motor on driver side front its the only one that opens, srs light on, abs light on,windshield motor toast, what is due next ? these are the problems I have with this civic which I spent $23k on in 2002 never again. My tercel is at 700000k still has the original exhaust on it drive better then the civic if I was to purchase a new car again which i might it will only be a toyota...the best. I never mentioned these problems to the dealership because I know him personally but I cant take it anymore. Honda should give me a new car or fix everything for free my whole family agrees with this even my neighbour who had the same model just traded it in at 50000k..

Civic LX 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 39,000 miles

The 36k mile warranty had just expired and all four struts started leaking. I ended up buying KYB replacements since I heard Honda replacements would soon leak again. Now with 98k miles, my front left strut is blown again. This set is lifetime warranty so it's no big deal. My dad recently had his front struts go bad on a 2004 Accord (40k miles). Makes me wonder about the build quality these days.

Civic DX-G 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission

Honda finally figures out that it is the struts that are the problem... and calls a re-call for the civics. they send a different model/type of struts... and that resolves the problem. glad that it was under warranty. Honda was nice enough to give me a $100 gift certificate for the inconvenience.

struts went out.... AGAIN! covered under warranty. was getting annoying was the vehicle is brand new. technician said it is because of the cold climate that we live in... plus the bad road conditions (pot-holes).... and the complaint continues... check the next thread.

uneven tire wear hydroplaning increase potential told struts need replacing by Honest 1 repair shop. Sams told me the tires were defective and needed replacing. Heard about a recall of 2002 Civics for struts but was never notified earlier. Don't know if recall still good to use. Told would cost $1100.
