I noticed the rumbling when accelerating while at ~2000 RMP's driving between 50-60 MPH. The car had 96k miles so I changed spark plugs but no help. I found this site and immediately went to my mechanic. He found oil in the radiator and talked to a few others who were aware of the problem. They replaced radiator and flushed transmission - $900. From ititial symptom until I changed radiator was about 2 weeks and 200 miles of driving. No problems on my first drive of 30+ miles since fix. I'm still considering trading it in for a new car since no one can accuratley predict if/when my transmission will fail. I wonder if I caught the problem early enough? Has anyone replaced radiator and had transmission flush in a similar scenario with long term success?

Although the problem of radiator failure and coolant leakage into the transmission is well documented and known to Nissan, they have refused to assist me in any way with this issue. It is blatantly irresponsible of Nissan to knowingly allow the consumer to placed in an unsafe driving situation.

Pathfinder LE 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 93,000 miles

I have the 2005 nissan pathfinder le. like sooo many others i had the trans coolant break and messed up my trans. i had a nissan dealer (in dearborne michigan) put in a new radiator and i went somewhere else to fix the transmission( back in Illinois where i live). i did get a letter from nissan about them uping the warranty on the radiator from 60k to 80k. i was lucky that the coolant leak broke at 73k (ok i wasn't lucky it should have never happened but ya get the list) so i did get my money back from nissan for all the repairs i did on my car that pertained the radiator, and the transmission. but here the kicker. as i stated earlier i had a nissan dealer replace the radiator!!!( in michigan mind you) I had to take my car back to nissan dealer (here in loves park illinois where i live) for a recall for some relay switch. I had them do a full check on my car cause it was running right again. Well (bleep) me!!! it broke again!! Yes folks the radiator i had installed in dearborne michigan broke. just like the 1st one! I was in the showroom of the dealership when the guy came out and told me! I lost it! (picture this, there were people in the showroom looking at new cars, but not for long!! lol) I started crying i was screaming at the poor guy (not his fault but his fault for working there). I just couldn't believe what i just heard! I yelled at him that this had already happened to me once b4 and now again it happened. what kind of poop parts are you all putting in these cars! This guy was trying so hard to get me out of the showroom. I did leave but not without having to say a few words about their cars they sell! So when i got home i called nissan and opened another case with them. after a few calls back and forth nissan came to the conclusion that they will NOT PAY for the cost to get the car fixed again. their excuse was that when the nissan dealership in dearborne michigan installed the new radiator they used an after market radiator not a nissan radiator!! R U FLIPPEN KIDDING ME!!! I was supposed to know this how????? (yes that's what i said to the beotch from nissan) I was never ever told that they installed an after market radiator and my LAW they have to disclose this to you and it has to be written in the sales reciept when u pay for any work to be done!!! And how the hell do i know that the 1st radiator was even a nissan radiator when i bought the car brand new??!!!! The woman from nissan needless to say hung up on me. lol... So now here i sit with a broken car again. I'm not done with nissan yet. They haven't heard the last of me. They don't call me the intimidator at work for nothing!! lol. So believe me folks i truly feel for all of you who are having the same problems that i am. But here's a small tid bit for you. i found out that the transmission coolant can be installed outside of the radiator. Its called a transmission external cooler. So when i can get my car fixed i am going to have that installed somewhere else other than inside the radiator. so this way if it breaks again (which in sure it will especially if its nissan) it wont mess up the radiator or the transmission again. Just be very very careful if any of you are gong to have nissan fix your car! YOU make sure they are using nissian parts. They do have after market parts which cost less for the buyer but by law they have to inform you of this!! Well folks I'm done for now my head hurts from reliving this nightmare all over again. I will let you know if i got anywhere with my car getting fixed from nissan. Good luck to you all. I promise you this i will never ever buy another nissan as long as i live!

my check engine light went off i had a code scanner and also called power nissan in hawthorne c,a, and dowtown nissan also in california. and they confirmed that the coolant had leaked into my tranny . i was blown away because I've never heard of a radiator breaking down like that and taking my tranny as a hostage and then killing it .IT also damaged the tranny valve body with the parking neutral swith is located witch means the coolant short circuit all the electrical in the tranny it was a financial nightmare witch im still paying now on a loan.i called nissan north america and they said that they could not help me because it was out of warranty it only had 93609 miles but i beleave that is a factory defect of the radiator and nissan knows about it and they refuse to take responsibility for it and all im asking for is the repair refund that i had to take a loan for . the solution for this is to get a external cooler for it its like buying tranny insurance and even works better it cools your tranny much better that factory design,

We had the exact same problem as everyone else. The coolant leaked into the transmission and has destroyed the transmission. We even installed an external cooler for the transmission one year ago to prevent the problem by bypassing the radiator. Apparently the coolant leaked into the transmission before that repair. We tried the Nissan consumer affairs and they would do nothing due to the miles. It is Nissan's responsibility to fix this due to the stupid design that caused the problem to begin with. We will never buy another Nissan and will tell everyone to do the same. Everyone that has this problem needs to contact BBB and file a lawsuit, maybe then Nissan will listen.

We also had the issue with the fuel gauge not reading correctly, that was a $450 repair.

My pathfinder's check engine light when off at 75000 miles but I was un aware of how bad this problem was when my husband finally took the car in the shop. It was too late it was over 80000 miles and Nissan stated the extended warrenty did not apply any longer to us. There we have to fix or get a new transmission and radiator and we have no money to fix it. If i would of know these vehicles had these problems sooner I would never had bought this car. Now I'm stick with a car payment and can't drive my car. using the bus is hell especially when you have a family of 5 and the other car is a truck that seats 2 only. I'm so upset with Nissan for not doing a recall on all these models. They probably wont do anything until someone dies do to there error.

When i took the car for service to Nissan when the car was 78,000 miles, they never told me about the radiator colant mixing with the transimition floud to be a known issue where Nissan extended the waranty to 80,000 miles.

I took the car for regular service at 81,000 miles for unrelated incident, they then tell me the the radiator coolant mixing with transmission fluid to be a known issue which needs to be fixed. The cost to replace the radiator and transmission to be over $8,000. I feel cheated by Nissan for waiting to tell me about this problem after the extended warranty runs out at 80,000 miles. Nissan should recall the pathfinder as this is a wide spread problem with possible fatal safety issue caused by defective radiator which Nissan knows about. .

Pathfinder SE 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 127,922 miles

Problem started with a cracked radiator. That ticket cost $668.94, and on the bill the Nissan Tech noted, "noticed trans fluid due for exchanging"...this was not mentioned when we paid the bill and pickup the truck, and, after we got home I saw this and thought, "oh, they are just saying it's due to be changed because of the mileage"...isn't how you might read that?

Within a day or two the transmission begins slipping so we take it back to Nissan and they inform us that the coolant got into the transmission fluid. We would have NEVER driven off after the radiator replacement if we knew it still had this problem. Nissan did a flush for $247.24 and we haven't had any issues with this aspect of the truck since. (Don't ask me about the camshaft sensors...it's in the shop for those now...another $500 repair bill...!)

I have a 2005 nissan pathfinder and a friend of mine has a 2007 nissan pathfinder and both of the the radiator coolant leaks into the transmission and cause the transmission and radiator to have to be replace and the pathfinder shuts down and want start and u take it to the dealer and they say at first its the antie delft sym but 2 to 3 week later you call them back and say it wasn't that and that when they break the big news that you need a new radiator and transmission it its going to cost 5800.00 to replace it that its a factory defect that is causing these problem and I that nissan needs to do something about the problems its not just the pathfinder that is having the problem extrra frontier and some of the other ones are having these problem so it's not the people it's a defect in the nissan I think Nissan Needs To Fix The Problem this happens to all of them at a little over hundred thousaud miles

Update from Jan 24, 2013: I took Mine to the dealer at 89000 miles when it shut down the first time and it was still under warranty and. they got it started back then at 102000 it shut down again and they couldn't get it started back then thats when they broke the bad news to me that the radiator leaks into to the transmission and cause the transmission to go out . I thank they need to have to fix all these nissan

I had the same leaking radiator problem like so many people with our 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. The vehicle was 2000 km over the extended warranty limit. We would bring the vehicle to Nissan dealership if we were made aware of the defect sooner. We asked Nissan for assistance. After many phone calls, emails, time spent collect past maintenance record requested by Nissan Canada and months of waiting, we finally got a reply. Below is my response to their reply.

"Thank you [Nissan Customer Service rep] for passing the news that Nissan would not do anything for our loss and their defective automobile, and for wasting our time. I can assure you we will spread our words about the quality of Nissan vehicle, so less people will experience what we have experienced. I am happy to report that after this incident we have traded in our Nissan for a Toyota which we have been very happy with, and my dad has sold his Nissan for a Lexus. Even though the resale Nissan worths less than other vehicle of similar type and age, it's wonderful to got rid of our headache and future headaches. I will look forward to the day Nissan disappear from this world. Best of luck to all of you working for Nissan."

We traded in the Nissan after replaced the radiator. Transmission was still working at the time, but we didn't want to take a chance of keeping a time bomb. The problem is well known among dealships of other car makers, so we got only $8000 for the trade in, but this is better than having to pay $5000 later on repairs. We had so many problems with this vehicle since we purchased it new from a dealership - noises, signal problem, gauge problem, etc. - and spent a lot of money fixing them including getting scammed by dealership (asked to pay for an item under warranty). What we experienced with Nissan is bad vehicle, bad service and ignorance.

This is our one time experience with Nissan. Lesson learned.

Had the radiator replaced and the transmission flushed 2 days before. The car hesitated and check engine light came back on. The car wouldn't accelerate and I had it towed back to the dealership. Now the transmission needs to be replaced estimated cost $4700. Read all of complaints online regarding this same problem with other Nissan vehicles. I contacted Nissan Consumer Afairs and am waiting to see if they will help with the issue. My car is outside of the 80k extension to the warranty for the radiator issue.

Pathfinder LE 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 128,000 miles

I was getting a viberation at around 40-50mph and at 60-65mph. I thought it was a tire out of balance, (I wish) I was informed at that time they, (the tire people) believed it to be the transmission. I took it to a transmission place and was told not to drive my vehicle that something in the radiator to do with the transmission was faulty and the coolant had leaked into the transmission. A repair quoted was 3-5 grand if it didn't have to be replaced, up to 7 grand if a new transmission was needed, radiator not included, which also needs to be replaced. I called a local Nissan dealership to ask if Nissan was doing anything to absorb the cost and was told no due to warrenty had expired. I expressed the many complaints against Nissan with many 05 and 06 pathfinders but still no relief. I for one don't have 3-7 grand to fix this problem. Is anything being done with anyone who is also having this problem? I have had no problems with my vehicle, had it serviced regularly until now. Ouchy, does it have to be such a big one? Judging by the many complaints for this issue, Nissan should be fixing this problem. I have never had a vehicle that has ever had transmission issues. Please tell me there is some relief out there... I have been without a vehicle for almost a month now.

Update from Aug 16, 2012: Just under $5000.00 my radiator and transmission are fixed, no thanks to Nissan, however is anyone else having computer issues like I am? My SERVICE ENGINE light is constantly on, my gas gauge doesn't work, it seems since the transmission computer was bad, but replaced, the rest of the computer is acting up. It just cost me $100.00 to have my car towed to the transmission place I had it fixed at, because this morning, it was as though I was starting the tranny issue all over again. Further research finds the computer is having issues communicating!! With who?? Couldn't tell you, I sware I bought a SUV this is a bunch of BS and I will tell everyone I talk to not to buy a Nissan. There have been over 100 complaints since I posted mine re: the tranny, yet Nissan does nothing. It's a shame. Makes me wonder how they sleep at night. Silly me, they (Nissan) can afford to buy blinders and ear plugs off the bogus defective transmissions they installed in the 05,06 and 07 Pathfinders. HEY NISSAN. it's ok to admit when you make a mistake, thats human, cars have engines, and people run computers. When did it become the cars job to run the computer people built?

The "service engine light" came on the car stopped shifting up or down. I took it to the dealer and they told me the coolant and transmission fluid had leaked into each other and the transmission needed to be replaced at an estimated cost of $5000. They are awaiting the delivery of a rebuilt transmission as I write this. This is the identical problem experienced by my son with the same car. We bought our cars weeks apart in 2005 and he drives more mileage than I do, so he had to replace his transmission about a 1.5 years ago.
