Hey there i am having the same problem with my piece of crap 2000 Xterra. nobody can figure out what the problem is i have bee to 5 mechanics now including the Nissan dealer. i have spent over 1000$ and have gotten nowhere. the worst part now is that i am no longer in Savannah ga. i am now in Cancun Mexico and am scared to take it to a shop here because usually when you get it back its in worse shape then when u take it in. my problem started with the idle going up and down whenever the vehicle is at a stand still in drive or park or neutral. however when i am driving it runs fine only when i am still does it sometimes stall out. then two weeks ago it started stalling when i was driving on the highway. then it would start up but run rough and then drive only to stall out again. I have cleaned the throttle body. catalytic converter. changed the spark plugs 3 times. new spark plug wires. new fuel filter and complete fuel system treatment and flush. yet still the problem remains, there is obviously a serious problem with this vehicle with a part be it computer fuel system vacume system, whatever because it sounds like everyone is going through the same thing but nobody knows what it is. please give me any help or info that you might have as i am more than 3000 miles away from home and i need to get this suv running again.

My Xterra has been having the same problem for a month now. The "Check Engine Light" has not been turned off and Nissan finally said that it is the EMS light, and that the car is just fine. This is AFTER I have had the distributor replaced, new spark plugs, and purge valve put in. Today, I stalled out again. This will be the fourth time going in for the same damn problem.

The problem is this...I'll be driving along fine. I will slow down to a stop, and the car will stall out. Sometimes it stalls where you can feel it, other times it is a smooth transition from having a functioning car to just being stranded on the side of the road. Later, the car will work perfectly fine.

Any words of advice?

I bought my 2000 Xterra used one year ago and its now 2007. Has only 65k on it and in the past year all i've done aside from oil changes, were new brakes, shocks, new battery, and A/C repair. Last week i was driving for 10 mins then came to a stop at a light. The car began shaking and then stalled. I couldn't start it and tried 3 times. the engine did crank though, radio worked, etc so this was not the battery or starter i don't believe. I put the car in neutral after a few minutes, it started and i drove right home scared it would recur. Its in the shop now and they are trying to find out what's wrong. the mechanic said he took it for a quick ride and it broke down on him. he has to do "tests" but believes its a valve problem of some kind related to the car heating up and a valve malfunctioning. yet all on the web i keep reading how it may be the fuel pump. any ideas on what it is and what this can cost??
