Huge win for car owners! All TSBs to be made public. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. They are the same organization that has petitioned the NHTSA & filed lawsuits to protect car owners over exploding gas tanks & other major safety issues. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

Please take a moment & say thank you by donating $5 or whatever you can to the Center for Auto Safety. Notes: The 2004 Nissan Xterra doesn't seem to have any problem trends. The only thing prospective owners should be aware of are the less-than-perfect (but acceptable) crash test ratings.

There are a very few transmission complaints, but nothing like the huge defect that shows up starting in with the 2005 model year.

After repairing steering column problem (recall id# 10V554000) less than one year, the gear box cracked and power steering fluid drained causing power steering lost function. I think gear box cracked problem is related to the steering column problem. I have contacted Nissan dealer and regional office but they denied the relationship of the problem.

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Xterra. The contact received recall campaign 10V554000, steering column. According to the recall the steering column shaft and joint were to be replaced with a shaft of a different design. The dealer replaced the lower shaft and joint, but the vehicle is still not steering properly. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and was told that the gear box needed to be replaced.
