CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005-2007 Xterra appears to have a widespread defect where coolant leaks into the transmission, causing transmission failure around 90,000 miles. Repair costs are typically upwards of $3,500.
The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

last winter the steering column locked up, no steering. At the time it happened, I had no warnings, no previous issues, car suddenly had no steering capabilities. Was able to get it home, contact dealership and get car to them to fix. Seems others have had this same problem, Nissan is aware of the issues, but refuses to acknowledge or take responsibility. I could have been seriously injured had this happened in a different location during a high traffic time. When I took it to the Nissan Dealership, they even seemed to be aware of the issue, but that didn't do anything to get Nissan to acknowledge it as a problem.
