Felt a thud in the rear end going into a slow turn. Thought I might have run over something, so kept going. The thud developed into a violent jerk of the rear end every time I turned. As I was limping the car to home I completely lost power to the rear end. The engine was running, transmission would go into gear, but there was no power being delivered to the wheels.
Called for a tow and upon inspection at the dealership, it was found that all the gearing in the rear differential was completely stripped. BMW only sells rear diff as a complete part, so approximately $2000 later I had a new rear diff installed in the car.
Not many reports of this online, but from what I gather the higher torque of the Diesel engine stresses the rear diff more than the normal gas engine does and leads to failure of the part.
