I believe manufacturers are suppossed to provide replacement parts for 10 years. It appears BMW is circumventing this law by makinig it harder and more expensive to get replacement parts before ten years has passed by making owners purchase unnecessary parts as an assembly. First case with my BWM X1- The inside door handle has a snap-in plastic cover coated with a rubber/plastic compound that deteriorates over time into a gooey substance that comes off onto your hand when entering or exiting the car. The dealer requires owner to purchase the whole door panel costing well over $1,000 not including the labor. The part itself can be purchased on eBay from China for approximately $16. Snaps on. Second case is for my BMW 2011 335i convertible. The dealer ran the car through their car wash and one piece of the convertible hardtop trim (plastic) broke. The dealer told me I had to pay over $680 (after discount) for a set of 6 trim pieces even though I needed just one. BMW used to sell the individual parts, but now they don't. IN addition to the parts, I'd have to pay to have the body shop paint the parts and then the labor to install them. Almost $1,000 to replace one plastic part not worth $25. Kit PN 54-37-5-A19-AA4, part I need was PN 54377184037. Second incident just happened this week. Although my 335i is now 10 years old, they were selling the kit several years ago, long before the ten years were up. They are deliberately forcing people to not repair their vehicles by pricing the parts so high that the owners can't afford it.

My husband was driving home from work on paper mill road in newark, Delaware and heard a "kerthunk" from the engine. He pulled over to the hard shoulder of the road, saw he had not run over anything, and then saw oil gushing onto the road from the motor. A few minutes later, as he was sitting in the stationary car, he saw the hood of the car starting to bubble. He exited the vehicle and the car went up in flames. The fire department came and extinguished the fire -- that process took around 15 minutes. The Delaware state patrol (officer ferguson) arrived on the scene and had the car towed. The car had been maintained by the BMW dealer for a "check engine" light 9 days before the fire. BMW usa issued a notice in July 2017 about issues with a thermostat in the X1. The thermostat was the only part replaced by the dealer during service (nb: There had also been a normal oil change maintenance at the end of August by the same dealer.)

While driving the 2014 BMW X1 at highway speeds (60mph) the front glass panel of the panoramic sunroof spontaneously exploded. The explosion caused a shocking boom, and some small fragments of tempered glass fell into the passenger compartment of the car, some fragments blew into the vehicle behind us and some fragments remained shattered in-place. When able to pull over and inspect, the glass seemed to shatter outward, and no object that may have impacted the glass could be found. The manufacturer denies responsibility for the spontaneous breakage, though the service personnel at the dealership said they have seen this happen in several other instances.

Driving from a parking slot at carl's jr., my car suddenly accelerated with a loud engine roar, to approximately 80-90 mph, jumped over a curb over an island, run through three parking slots, hit another curb and hit a palm tree-which finally stopped my car- at a distance of about 50-60 feet from my parked position. I was stepping on the brakes for the whole 5-6 seconds until my car hit the palm tree. The brake just did not work. Mistakenly stepping on the accelerator, is out of the question--with all the jarring and swaying--any idiot will step on the brake, which I did. My wife is hospitalized with a fractured spine and I suffer recurrent headaches. BMW and allstate promised to investigate but no earlier than 3 months after the accident!
