engine probems/ i bought parts for my 95 buick skylark 2.3 engine/sparks plugs/thermostat/water pump/valve cover gasket. engine wont start still. any ideas?

maybe caused from the previous owner not keeping up with oil changes, but 88000 miles is to soon for a head gasket to go in my opinion. ya its a $20 gasket but costs another grand in labor.
