According to Delphi and BWI (makers of the Magneride system), failure at 17000 miles can only be due to a defect in the seals and cannot (likely) be caused by user abuse. According to various chat forums, it is remarkably unusual for this to happen, but has happened in cars with as little as 100 miles on the odometer.
Accordingly in every published instance GM and GMPP has replaced the shocks or struts with less than 60k miles, but Steve Foley Cadillac refuses to d so.
