A/C and heat only work on driver side

I have only had the 2008 Chrysler 300 touring for about a month and a half. It was a gift from a relative that passed away. My excitement turned to grief when I took the car to the local Chrysler dealer, twice in one week, to find out why the A/C and Heat only work on driver side vents and the cooling works intermittently. I was then told the issue was a $2000.00 repair job. I guess the main point of my complaint would be that I was told "well you can expect this issue, the car is 9 years old." My response was Yes, well that may be, but the vehicle only has 62000 km on it. That to me is equivalent to a car driven about 3 years. I can't help but feel this should be covered under some kind of warranty or if this is a persistent issue for many people with this make and model, then there should be a recall. I was also told to close all the vents and drive the car with the windows down until the issue in question is repaired. The leak sends out some level of a carcinogen toxin. So weather conditions pending I have a car to drive. This all seems "CRAZY" too me!!! Opinions would be appreciated.
