Charger RT 5.7L V8 Hemi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 125,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Just dropped the valve and is screwed. Merging onto the highway and it just died! Very scary and dangerous for myself and the tow truck driver. Lost compression on both banks. A remanufactured engine from www.jasperengines.com was quoted $6,000 for engine and parts (3 year/ 100,000 mile warranty.) One from http://www.proengines.com/ is only $2700 w/ the intake manifold (3 year/ unlimited mile warranty.) our shop has quoted us $2000 for the engine swap. Not sure if it's worth it to fix or if we should scrap it and move on with something more reliable. I knew I shouldn't have bought this mid 2000 american made Hemi pos. Wonder if anyone made progress with a class action suit with Chrysler?

Have a 06 Dodge Charger RT, still owe 8k on it. Kept the charger well maintained. Drove to a friends house one night, about 2 miles away. Shut off the car for about 10 mins, went to start back up and got a clunk sound. Had towed back to my house. Come to find out the intake valve fell into the #6 cylinder, putting a hole in the piston. Jasper wants $4k for a motor. Found rebuilt motor for $2400 and install for $600, so probably about $3300 for motor and install, motor mounts, gaskets, coolant and oil. Now I'm in $11,300 dept, this sucks :(

Dodge knows about this problem and does nothing about it. For shame, spread the word.. Don't buy a 06-08 Dodge 5.7l hemi. Get a Ford or Chevy.

Charger RT 5.7L Hemi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

Been babying this car since we bought it brand new when it was released. Wife was driving when crazy grinding noise occurred, had it towed. Dropped Valve Seats destroyed two pistons. Engine needs to be replaced. Sent to dealer, nothing they can do. Very common problem, Manufacturer refused to make this into a recall, would rather deal with legal. Dealership was sympathetic, they had 5 other chargers in for the same problem, but their hands were tied. Don't have money to rebuild, so vehicle is a huge paper weight stored in my garage. Of course this happens after my son just purchased a brand new challenger, I would have deterred him to a different direction if i had known Chrysler Dodge would treat their customer like this. Any help would be appreciated.

Charger RT 5.7L V8 Hemi

  • Automatic transmission

I, like so many others I see have experienced the complete premature engine failure of my Dodge Charger R/T with no warning, engine light or any sign anything was wrong with the engine. It was driving just fine, I had made several stops while running errands, filled it up with premium gas as I always have and went into my last stop. I came out to start the car and it would not start. The engine cranked, but would not start completely and would not stay running. The engine was crazy loud and rough for the few seconds it ran. The computer system read, "System OK" and there were no engine / service lights on.

All of the car’s maintenance was done and also always did premium oil changes. The car has always been babied and only driven in the late spring, summer and early fall months and put away for the winter. I loved this car and in every other way it is in near mint condition. There was no apparent reason for her engine dying.

I had the car towed and looked at and the mechanic told me the valve seat dropped into one of the cylinders and has caused a lot of damage to the engine. He told me that it would be cheapest to put another used engine in it and it’s not worth repairing the damaged engine. This is unbelievable since it only has 87,000 miles on it and the car otherwise is near mint. I am furious that Dodge apparently new about this problem. They designed a disposable engine with a poorly designed aluminum head and valve seat assembly. This is criminal! The engine should easily last to at least 200,000 miles!

I see from all of the other complaints exactly like mine both here and other places on the net that Chrysler doesn’t give a s#*t about this very common problem which is getting more common all the time as these engines reach the 90,000 mile range. It’s not just the 5.7L Chargers either…it’s also the 300’s and the Dodge Ram trucks with the 5.7L Hemi engines.

I am disgusted with Chrysler! I will never buy another one of your products if this does not get some attention! I was about to sell the Charger and buy a new one. Not any more…with the cost to fix this lemon probably only to have it happen again as the replacement engine will also be due to have the same issue, it’s not worth fixing. The car was still worth $12,000+ black book but now is basically scrap. This means I could have driven a much more expensive car for the same period of time/miles. I will be looking at other options for my new car. Shame on you Chrysler, you had a loyal customer but fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I will also be letting everyone I know about this issue. I have several friends with this engine in their car or truck. I will be advising them to unload them asap if they want to avoid this costly nightmare.

I am a loyal Dodge customer. I am bewildered at my catastrophic engine failure. I have meticulously maintained my wife's 2006 Dodge charger RT and this is what we get for our loyalty. A boat anchor of an engine and a huge question mark as to what to do with this car at this point. Is a new crate motor going to fix this problem or just prolong the inevitable? Do I junk the car and switch brands? We love the car but hate the repair cost. Is there a class action lawsuit? This is unacceptable behavior from a corporation. I feel like I have been once again taken advantage of by greedy CEO's. If not Sony, Chrysler.
