Charger SE 2.7L V6

The engine suddenly began to overheat and when I stopped, the coolant system was empty. I added more coolant as soon as the engine cooled in order to be able to drive home and the coolant boiled as it was added. Once in the shop, I was told the water pump was leaking and it would need to be replaced, at a significant cost, approximately $900. Once I OK'd the job and they began the work, they informed me there was significant oil sludge in the engine and they had to move slowly and carefully in order to avoid causing damage. Once the water pump was replaced, the car would not start and I am now being told that the fix will be to replace the entire engine. To say that a 6 year old engine with regular maintenance performed needs replacement is rather more than ridiculous.

I went outside and there was a puddle under the car, so I took it to my mechanic and he said the water pump went bad. They replaced it and the thermostat for $321 and it doesn't leak anymore.

I have all the maintenance records for the car and it shows the water pump was replaced before 30k miles ago.
