The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Dakota. While driving 15 mph or less, the contact heard a loud thumping noise underneath the front passenger side of the vehicle. The noise intensified whenever a turn was made. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the ball joints failed. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic and the front passenger side ball joints were replaced. The failure recurred years later and the upper ball joints were replaced at 59,244 miles. The contact believes that the Chrysler ball joints do not have greasers, which the new replacement ball joints have along with a lifetime warranty. He believes that the manufacturer should issue a recall. The first time the ball joints failed, the contact was forced to replace them with Chrysler parts. He believes that this is why they failed a second time. The failure mileage was 32,904 and current mileage is 59,244. Updated 05/26/09 the consumer replaced the ball joints at his expense. Updated 05/28/09.

Ball joints for the 1998-2004 Dodge trucks were faulty, I could not believe after all the complaints received that nothing has ever been done about this faulty parts that could lead to serious injury or death. You could do a search for faulty ball joints on the web and there are thousands of complaints about these ball joints wearing out after sometimes 20,000 miles this is ridiculous and dangerous you guys should be ashamed for not holding Dodge responsible for fixing these especially when there was a recall for the 2000 model year. Yet no other years yet I am sure that they used that same ball joint for all of those model years.

I am on my second set of having to replace the ball joints on my 1999 Dodge Dakota at 89,000 miles. I know this is a common problem with all of Dodge Dakota's and durango's, and they were forced to deal with the 4WD models of 2000-2003. Mine, however, is a 1999 2wd model, and the ball joints are no better on mine. Fortunately, I have my truck checked enough that my wheels haven't fallen off yet, but I was told recently I was going to have to replace them again. I'm sick of paying for these, and Dodge needs to finally admit their big screw ups on these.

I have recently have had suspension issues with my 1999 Dodge Dakota ext. Cab pickup with 69,600 miles.. I have been the original owner since new. I experienced shaking, noises during corning, etc. Coming from the front end of vehicle. I then took it to an alignment shop and they informed me that my lower ball joints were bad and could separate and cause an accident. I did some internet research and found numerous websites that included notables of other individuals with the same issues. I also found that other Dodge Dakota models have had ball joint recalls. This didn't include my year of truck. I wanted to file a complaint so that I can be included in this ongoing investigation regarding ball joint issues with the 1999 Dodge Dakota 2 wheel drive ext. Cab vehicles. I have not replaced the faulty ball joints as of yet. The vehicle is not currently in use. Thank you, brent owens.

The contact recently purchased a used vehicle that exhibited a front suspension problem. After the initial vehicle purchase he noticed a pulling sensation on the front suspension. He took the vehicle to an independent repair shop for inspection. The mechanic determined both front suspension lower ball joints needed to be replaced. However, no repairs have been made due to excessive expense.

99 Dodge Dakota steering felt loose and wandered at highway speeds, I took it in for a alignment, technician informed me upper and lower ball joints and 1 tie rod were worn past spec, had to be replaced. The truck only has 34000 miles on it!, is in mint shape, and never driven offroad. I understand Chrysler recalled 2000+ up Dakota/durango for ball joint problems, what about 97-99 models? same vehicle/ same problem. Can you say rip-off.

The contact stated the upper and lower ball joints along with the tie rod assembly wore out so badly that it almost caused an an accident. The dealership told him that it was not covered under the recall for the ball joints because his VIN was not included. The NHTSA recall 04V596000 was issued he had the ball joints replaced, and was seeking reimbursement, but because of his VIN not being included they would not reimburse. Updated 12/27/2005 -

I owned a 1999 Dodge Dakota club cab since 09-99. It was bought new..before my warranty expired on Sept-2000, there was a popping noise from my front end, which was attributed to the ball joints. Not only that, but every time I filled it up, gas would start pouring out from the tank. I took it to the the dealership maroone Dodge in pembroke pines, fl), and was told that it was probably because I put too much gas in it. After the warranty expired, the problem got worst, and I was told that I needed to replace the fuel pump gasket, and the ball joints. I asked why I haven't been told that before my warranty expired, but the service advisor that attended me wasn't working there anymore. I complained to Chrysler, trying to service my truck since I had complained from before the warranty had expired, but they never got back to me. I was just in this chat room, and saw that plenty of people have had the same problem with the ball joints, I don't know about the fuel leaking all over from the tank.

Contact states the upper and lower ball joints on the right side and left side had to be replaced due to a rejection notice from a safety inspection. This year when the vehicle was taken to be inspected they rejected the safety part of the vehicle. The vehicle will not stay in alignment. When the vehicle was being driven it made a thumping noise and pulled to the right side. The steering wheel constantly had to be turned to the left. There was abnormal wear on the tires, and the tires had to be replaced. There was a recall on model year 2003-2004 for this component, but this model year was not included in the recall. The vehicle has not been to a service dealer yet. The consumer was going to call the manufacturer.

1999 Dodge Dakota pickup, V-6. the vehicle front ball joints are defective and will have to be replaced immediately by my mechanic. The mechanic mention a recall on on the ball joints so I contacted the dealer. They informed me that the recall is only for 2000-2003 vehicles. Since the ball joints are faulty, I beleive the recall needs expanding to other years and if service has been completed, reimbursement is warranted to the owner
