CarComplaints.com Notes: The first year of the new Dodge Dart had a rough start, with owners reporting a disproportionate number of engine and transmission problems.

For transmission, the main complaints are transmission failure & rough shifting. So far, average mileage for transmission failure is 25,000 miles. Not good.

For engine problems, it usually starts with the engine light coming on for any number of reasons: bad sensors, ignition coil replacement, bad wiring, faulty gas cap ... dealers are replacing various components with varying degrees of success, or telling owners they can't duplicate the issue.

I noticed when I bought the car that it had an open recall on my Dart for the transmission bracket (R42) which stated the car could drop into neutral while driving, so I had it fixed. Soon after I had it fixed it started to mess up. I would be driving up to a stop light and press the brakes and the engine would tach out and so I had to coast to the side of the road and shut the car off. When I turned it back on it would tach out again. (For some reason the car tachs out at 2000 rpm in park) except in this case it revved all the way out. Well I called the dealership to explained what had just happened they said they would have to charge me to look at what they just replaced. So with that being said the car does it on a weekly basis and I'm just ready to mark it as a loss and take it to have it crushed.

In noticed when it's cold and I come to a stop sign my engine will rev up. But since then it has done it on occasions and it's like it's wanting to drive forward and could cause me to wreck.

I had my car in Bustards Dodge here in Waterloo Ontario last month roughly for this rpm issue and I had no oil in my car and it was hesitating a lot. Dodge had my car for a week and put 1000km on it and said they couldn't get it to do anything of what I was telling them. But they did say they have heed of this problem. They gave my keys back and I was told they couldn't do anything about it.

Just yesterday I crashed my car because of this rpm issue while I was at a complete stop at a light. My car took off without me touching the gas. I'm furious and we all need to stick together and get this figured out before anyone gets seriously hurt! I'm giving my number out for anyone who wants to contact me for these reasons of engine malfunction and these reasons only 778-821-9251 name is sean

Dart SRT 1.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

Not only does it rev, I have had it Dart into oncoming traffic as I would come to a complete stop. It also shut off completely on the highway, I had to drift to the side and shut it off and turn it back on again.

Dart Rallye 1.4L Turbo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 7,456 miles

While stopped at a stop light, with my foot on the brake, the car revved to 7000rpm. I was very concerned, thought the car was going to take off. Love the car but this issue is causing me concern. Is there a bigger problem?
