CarComplaints.com Notes: The first year of the new Dodge Dart had a rough start, with owners reporting a disproportionate number of engine and transmission problems.

For transmission, the main complaints are transmission failure & rough shifting. So far, average mileage for transmission failure is 25,000 miles. Not good.

For engine problems, it usually starts with the engine light coming on for any number of reasons: bad sensors, ignition coil replacement, bad wiring, faulty gas cap ... dealers are replacing various components with varying degrees of success, or telling owners they can't duplicate the issue.

Dart SLX 1.4L

  • Manual transmission
  • 800 miles

I can't imagine what the engineers were thinking when they designed the throttle controls for this car. Except for the first couple of months I have had it, I have always noticed that the engine surges under acceleration. It is kind of annoying and I would love it if it didn't do it, but how to fix it?? I have no idea

Dart SXT

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,000 miles

Bought the car End of May 2014- Had first oil change in July- Car started running rough the same day we had the oil change, Check engine light came on started back firing and sputtering. Misses at idle and in reverse. After Check engine light came on took in they swapped plug/wire 4 and 5 and did something to the online computer- no new codes showed up. It still continues to hesitate at high speeds especially when been driven for long periods of times. Also misses at stop lights and in reverse. I have had it in the shop 5 times and they say nothing shows in the codes. Can only use Shell gas in the tank as other gasoline makes the missing issue worse. Worse car I have ever bought.

Dart

  • Manual transmission
  • 1,500 miles

I noticed an unusual surging sensation within 3 months of buying the Dart. While accelerating from a stationary position, especially while turning right or left after leaving a stop sign. At first, I thought maybe the clutch was slipping because the car was gaining speed like it should. I ruled that out because the engine isn't racing, however, the car would surge in acceleration as if I were riding the clutch. I notice that this behavior is more evident on cold days, so I figured that maybe it just needs to warm up more.

Lately, when I engage the clutch to shift gears, the engine revs briefly as if my timing is off when letting off of the gas. I have driven standards 36 years and don't think it's my timing. I think the engine is just sluggish in response to pedal movement, like maybe the accelerator cable is sticky or something.
