The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Durango. While driving 75 mph, the rear driver side tire vibrated, accompanied by a grinding noise and loud sound. The contact exited the vehicle and discovered the whole tire was missing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the rear axle and drum needed to be replaced. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Rear left axel fell off my Dodge Durango and caused an accident. I was trying to get Chrysler to give me a copy of the inspection that was done by a inspector hired by and was denied. This model of SUV has had wheel problems in the past and I wanted to be sure it was not a defect. I was told the information is proprietary and I would legal documentation to get the inspectors report. The case #"S are: [xxx] and [xxx]. I also saved all emails regarding this problem. I can email them to you or mail. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Consumer stated that in January 2004 she heard a noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. She took the vehicle to the dealer, who repaired the vehicle. Then, again while taking a long drive, the consumer heard the same kind of noise. She took the vehicle back to the dealer, who told her that they could not find anything wrong. But the noise kept getting louder and louder. The consumer took it back a third time. Dealer kept the vehicle three weeks, rebuilding the front end. This was in May 2004. Currently, the consumer heard the same kind of noise. But this time the consumer was advised they could not solve the problem.

Purchased Durango new Jan 2002 in Kentucky. Within 6 months Dodge recalled it to replace whole back axle assembly (Dodge stated it was too small for Durango). Since owning, when putting into reverse the transmission hesitates, and the vehicle barely moves (dealer stated could not find any problem). In Alaska the check engine light comes on when going from warm garage into cold outdoors, stays on for a week (dealer could not find anything wrong). Loud pounding noise when traveling above 40 mph with back windows down. Durango has less than 20,000 miles and back seat shows considerable wear where seat belt latch contacts seat (poor design/placement of latch).
