leaking rear differential/left axel joint

Soon after purchasing this vehicle used I noticed that there was an oil spot on the floor and an burning oil smell. Turns out where the drivers side rear axle joins the rear differential was leaking. I originally assumed that this was due to a bad axle seal; however, the dealership indicated that it was a seal internal to the rear differential. The whole rear differential was going to need to be replaced since it is a "sealed unit." This is a common enough issue that I am going to have to wait a long time to get it because it is on back order and there were many others waiting for one before me. I felt I should put this up here because this appears to be more than a one-off problem just for little old me.
