This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
My dashboard started developing cracks about a months ago, and they just kept getting worse. Currently there is a huge hole in my dashboard exposing wires (radio no longer works properly) and the passenger side airbag.
The dash in my 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck has cracked, the cracking started a few months after I bought it. I have looked into replacing it but it is way expensive and have heard other owners of this type of truck have had complaints too. It was brought more to my attention when I saw it on the news last night. I feel if I paid over $18,000 dollars and more from my truck it should not have had a cracking dash months after I bought it. I contacted Dodge but they were not willing to fix it because it was considered cosmetic, but if its cosmetic then why is it happening to everybody that owns a Dodge Ram"? I am scared for the safety of me and my family pieces can fly up if you hit the slightness bump and what if the air bags deploy"
Dash has cracked in multiple places. Not safe to ride in for any passenger or driver. This has been going on long enough. Equipment failure is part of why these complaints are entered here. Does no one listen" airbags, sharp corners, electrical failure what more has to happen"
Crack in dash panel started about Aug 2009, it has now became a full blow mess as large pieces have fallen into the wiring harness inside the dash. This could be a hazard if you roll down the window and some smaller pieces fly up into your face, or could set on wires and catch fire. I know of at least two other 1500's that are 98 and 2000 models doing the same thing as mine.
1999 Dodge Ram 1500. Dashboard has numerous cracks in it. Pieces are falling down inside front compartment and could cause other issues (electrical, etc.). this has been happening for ~5-7 years.
Cracked dashboard. Its dangerous because the edges are very sharp. I have already change it once but the same problem happened again. Suggesting a recall on Dodge Ram cracked dashboards.
Dashboard on my 1999 Dodge Ram has cracked in several places. I just bought the truck 2 months ago and it already had one large crack and has gotten several more since I purchased it. I think Dodge needs to be held responsible for this, its a well documented defect. I also believe its a safety hazard. In an accident I don't want to have to worry about plastic from my dashboard turning into shrapnel when the airbag goes off.
1999 Dodge Ram 1500 44, the dash has completely crack and broken out. I hit a bump in the road and a piece the size of a plate falls into the lower part of the dash. My dash completely has collapsed, I have never heard of this before on any vehicle. Then I read the blobs and saw thousands of people having the same problem. Why is this happening to are trucks, and everyone is having the same problem, at what point do we say manufacturer defect. How many people have to say the same thing before some one does something, they are not even offering a reasonable repair. $1000 to replace the dash is a joke, a plastic cover, are you kidding! Dodge does not even make this dash any more so it is supply and demand! something has to be done.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated the entire dashboard was cracking and separating. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on numerous occasions in which they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The cracks became progressively worse. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was unknown.
I noticed a very small crack on the passenger side dash, by the door, last summer and didn't think much of it. Now it is completely cracked, front to back, to the middle of the passenger seat.
Approximately 2 years after the purchase of my then brand new Dodge Ram 1500, the dashboard began to crack. The cracks continued to grow in size and increase in number until chunks of the dashboard began to cave in and pop out. Currently the dashboard is either missing completely in very large sections, or chipped, cracked and caved in others. There is no way that this will not cause, or is a safety issue in an accident, or even just under normal operating conditions.
Dashboard cracked in 2 different areas. One crack is inline with the steering wheel. The other is inline with the passenger air bag. Both run from the windshield back towards the seat.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. While the vehicle was parked the contact noticed that the dashboard was cracked and over time it had increased in size. The contact also stated that he experienced electrical problems with his stereo due to the crack in the dashboard. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
The dash started cracking years ago and continues to crack so badly that chunks are falling off leaving sharp edges exposed. There are many Ram owners with the same issue. It's apparent that this a a manufacturer's defect that needs to be recalled. I don't want to replace it with the same dash and have the same thing happen, but there a risk of being seriously cut by the sharp pointed edges as the dash continues to crack and fall apart.
