The contact owns a 1999 Ford Contour. The vehicle stalls and makes a lot of noise during acceleration. The overhead lights and other interior lighting will not dim when the vehicle is turned off. The contact must remove the bulbs to dim the lights. When the key is inserted in the ignition, the ignition switch locks up. A mechanic stated that the front sway bar was leaking and the brakes, rotors, and struts were corroded and needed to be replaced. The purchase date and powertrain were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.
Starter engaged with no keys in ignition wire harness melt down from battery. Starter started to smoke. Mechanic me informed that Contour has a recall but dealer(Ford) has not this car.
Consumer was able to rotate the ignition key to the locked position and remove the key while driving and in gear. The cause had not been determined. Consumer will contact the dealer in the near future.
NHTSA recall 99 V 060 000/manufacturer's recall 99S06, FMVSS 114: Ignition switch is able to turn while driving. Dealer was contacted, and informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under recall due to VIN. Feel free to provide any further information.
