I have owned two ford trucks one manual, one automatic both treated like work trucks should be. Never had any major problems. Have owned this truck one year,I really like it, bought it used from a very trusted dealer. It is just awful to see all the problems other have had. I thought this would be my last truck it should go 180000 + with no major drive line problems.I wish I knew of this site and others before purchase Have to cancel my 40th anniversary/vacation plans to pay for the fix. Tell all your friends about this site,Consumer report did not have this info.

E-150 XLT 5.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

For the last 20k miles I have limped the nicest truck I've ever owned along. Problem started around 70K and I recognized it right away as the torque converter not locking up in OD. I now run the truck with OD locked out, as it will shudder itself to pcs in OD. The bands are starting to slip now as the torque converter continues to disintegrate and particles flow through the trans. The trans shop, where I know the owner, has repaired no less than 12 of the 2005 F150 transmissions. His quote is $1200 - 1500 for an aftermarket heavy duty torque converter and new bands. I bought the truck used with very low miles (20K), so I still have payments. I'm hoping I can limp it along a while longer until I can afford to fix it - then I'll basically give the piece of crap to the first fool who will buy it for what little I owe on it! FOMOCO has let me down severely, as I have always been Ford, as has the entire family has for the last 80 years. The 4x4 has been repaired twice and I read that a plug change can be a nightmare (see TSB 06-5-9 on that). Don't take it to a dealership, take it to a recommended trans shop, get it patched, then get rid of it and buy something you can depend on. That's definitely no longer a FORD. These are sad times for those of us who do our best to buy American and support things we have always believed in.

THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND BURNING IN MY E-150. I EXPECT FORD TO COVER SOME OF THE COST FOR REPAIRING THEIR TRANSMISSION THAT FAILED PREMATURELY.
