1997 E250 ford window van, V8 Triton engine + AT, would not pass two year CA smog checks three times in a row. The first time, we had the plugs and the coils which are bolted over the plugs replaced by the local dealer for over $1000, with no state subsidy. The second time, the smog shop mechanic cleaned the coils which are bolted over the plugs and had carbon deposits, with $600 paid by the state for failed smog check repairs. The third time, we had the gasmix sensor replaced because it was giving the wrong signals, with $600 again paid by the state. I got frustrated and almost junked the van for being in the repair shop too often, but it is now running OK for a backup second car/truck that carries over 4000 pounds.
