This is the second time, I've had the same rear pane of glass shatter on the passenger side. The dealer told me they have seen this issue before, but it is not covered under the extended warranty. I contacted Ford Customer Care and they opened a case file, but said they have never heard of this happening, which I find hard to believe considering the number of complaints I have found online. They did say if there is a recall, I could be reimbursed for the expense, but providing a receipt for the repair.

I also emailed Ford about this issue, and they said I should see the dealer, which was no help at all.

Like others, on a cold January morning I activated the rear window defrost and 2 minutes later I heard BANG. The passenger side rear window had shattered. The warranty is over and when Ford told me about $1100 to change the rear window I decided to claim it to my insurance company. Finally I am also told that the defroster needed to be changed.....$400 .....plus man power......total $1800. The dealer doesn't seem to care!!!!

rear window shattered rear window shattered rear window shattered

Right rear window shattered and molding caught fire due to the rear defrost... I went to the dealer and was told nothing they could do because my warranty expired...I'm currently escalating the matter with the dealer to try and resolve this amicably. I will update with outcome.

Update from Feb 8, 2014: I paid $250 dollars to have the entire rear window replaced and installed from the dealer. After escalating the matter to the general manager of the dealership and being referred to the service manager who contacted Ford. Ford covered the parts and the dealership and I split the labour. I'm assuming thats how it broke down anyway....

I believe I could have paid less but didn't want to wait any longer...

Same story as the rest.. Trying to look up replacement part number, very hard to figure out which part I need. Looks like a job I can do myself when I figure out the correct part. Any help with this? I think it may be Part Number: 9L3Z-15422B30-A but they have other options. heated power rear slider dark grey tint.

Sound familiar...Driving to work and backing into parking spot...see smoke billowing from rear window! Shut off truck and take a look and the rear window defroster malfunctioned and there was a large circular area in the lower left corner of right panel, buring to a crisp. Burn mark and shattered window looks like everyone elses. It was sizzling like a cheap steak! Just took my truck to dealer and awaiting response. Let's guess what will happen...bought in April 2010, now Oct 2013. If they do not do the right thing, they lost a Ford customer. Looking forward to a $1000 tab.

Chilly morning so I turned on the rear defogger for the 1st on my 2010 F150 and after about 2 minutes driving, heard a loud pop like a gunshot. Thought the truck was hit by something only to notice that the rear right side window was shattered. After inspecting, no traces of a foreign object seemed to have caused it. Learned online that this seems more common in 2010 F150's than Ford wants to admit. Waiting on dealer's reply as to who will foot the bill.

It's just annoying. At 20,000 miles my 2 front rotors warped. At 22,000 bad wear on tires, due to bad alignment. How it got like that I don't know. And at 30,000 miles I turn on my Rear Defroster and 1 minute later POW !!! I thought my truck roof got hit by some flying object from an airplane. I was driving outside of the airport road at 5 Dark AM. After work at 2:30 pm I climbed up on the bed to check my roof and it was okay. Not till I got inside and started driving, I looked in the rear view mirror and notice the passenger side rear glass was shattered. No indication that it was hit by anything. Just shattered. Dealer said glass was not covered in warranty....Bummer. ^%$#$%%^!!!

rear window shattered

I have really been satisfied with my truck since purchase and this has been the first problem I had. About a week ago I was on my way to work on a 45 degree morning and turned the rear defrost on, 5 minutes later I heard the POP and had no idea what it was as no cars where around. I stopped at work and walked around my truck and never noticed the window until I got back in on the way home. The glass is completely spider webbed. I googled shattered rear window F-150 and found site after site noting the issue.

Called Ford dealer today as I am just out of warranty (although that doesn't even seem to work on some dealers) and asked if there was a recall - service guy says he hasn't heard of it before, which can't be right with everyone here. anyways like $730 to fix for a Ford screw up...awesome. I will call ford personally, but guessing I will have no luck. The picture shows some duct tape on the window as I am hoping it helps keep it together for a few days before it gets fixed

I am so happy this didn't happen when I had my grandkids in the back seat. The window stayed intact but it would have been very scary for a 3 or 5 year old to have heard that bang. I have read on many forums about this problem and would hope that Ford would research this and put out a recall. It seems to be limited to 2010 years. I love my truck and do not want to be without it for a week or more but nothing can be done. I am hoping this is covered under warranty!!

rear window shattered

It was a cold morning in January, I started my truck, turned on the heater, turned on the rear window defroster and was on my way to work when i heard a loud "bang". I turned around and saw that my passenger side, rear window had shattered.

I began looking on line to see if there were other complaints of this, I learned of at least 31 other incidents. When I phoned the dealership to see if this was a recall - they advised me that it was not at this time. He did tell me that due to the fact that my truck was still under warranty, that it would be covered.

Today - I am taking my truck into to have pictures taken and the information submitted to Ford for the approval to have it fixed at no cost to me? We will see what they say.

I will update this once i hear the resolution from Ford.

Driving in on a not cold day (temp 55F ish), 20-25 miles from home at speed limit (60 mph), head a POP/CRACK! Looked around, briefly - saw nothing. When I got to work and parked, noticed the back window that is split into 1/3's, the driver side completely shattered. It couldn't have been a rock, obviously, and it wasn't shot out (only one on road, and it didn't fall into cab/bed), so had to be from torsion on the frame, or bad window. I was driving on asphalt road that I've driven on a thousand times, didn't hit any bumps, and didn't run over anything. Ford dealer says call extended warranty, extended warranty says call insurance. Insurance says they'll take care of it, but $200 deductible. This, and the sun roof motor are the only things (so far) gone wrong with my F150. I hope it stays that way.

Was on my way to work and heard a sizzling noise in the back seat, the thought came to me that I thought my rear defrost was catching fire. As I reached to turn it off, the back passenger rear window shattered. I then smelled a little smell which dissipated soon after. Called my local Ford dealer, they said they would squeeze me in and look at it. They wanted me to initially turn it in to my auto insurance, I said "not if this is under warranty!" Well it's now the third day they've had it and all they can tell me is they are waiting to hear back from "Ford" to determine what they're going to do. From everything I've read about other consumers having the same issue, I believe Ford has a problem here and needs to suck it up and recall this issue no matter what the cost. They're about ready to lose a long-time, loyal Ford customer. Is it going to take a serious issue, such as a death for them to wake up and get this taken care of? Once I find out the resolution of my particular case, I will pass the word along here....stay tuned.

Update from Apr 24, 2013: Well just got my quote for the window repair...$798.80! Ford said it's not covered under the "premium" extended warranty! Glass isn't covered, but my glass wouldn't be broken if there wasn't an electrical issue that caused it to break...which is covered but they won't tell you that! So they wanted me to turn this into my auto insurance. Called them, spoke with my agent told him the issue and that they as insurance companies need to get on board with this and call Ford up themselves and request this be taken care of instead of the insurance company having to pay for a Ford issue. It basically boiled down to me turning this in to, the insurance paying the deductible and IF Ford ever does a recall, I can get reimbursed. I also called the Ford complaint line and put in a complaint. I was told it's the feedback of the consumers that prompts recalls, so EVERYONE THAT READS THIS OR HAS THE SAME ISSUE....PUT IN A COMPLAINT, PLEASE!

The passenger side rear window shattered as there appears to be a electrical short in the defrost wiring in the glass. It was -4 March 2nd and the lower corner of the window was red hot about the size of a nail head. With the moisture on the widow and short caused it to shatter. Another problem of many with my last Ford product.

My wife had just left the house and about 3 miles from home she heard a loud snap, looked in the mirror and the right side glass in the rear window had shattered. She had not hit any bumps, potholes, etc. I called the dealer who didn't appear too concerned. The gentleman advised that I call my insurance company if I had Full Glass coverage. I do so I called The Hartford and Safe-Lite is coming Friday to replace the window. It sure would be nice to know though if there is any structural or design defect that will cause this to happen again. Only time will tell.

Just received the first heavy frost this morning and started up my truck. Before driving out of my drive way I turned on my rear window defroster. I drove about 1/2 block from my house and heard a load POP only to find out one of my rear panel window shattered (passenger side). The back window has a power slider in the center and two small windows on each side of it. The dealership said glass was not covered under warranty but what the heck! Nothing hit it it just shattered. 4 hours shop time to remove the rear seat and the whole rear window will need to be replaced... I am not happy with Ford. This will cost me at least $1,000 to repair.

rear window shattered

This is my first Ford, and my first problem with it! What an ordeal. I let my truck run for about five minutes jumped in put it in drive, moved about ten feet and heard a loud snap.I looked back to see my window shattered! Thats not the ordeal. Dealing with Ford and trying to get this fixed is. Its been a week and still no answer. I call every day and its " we should know tommorrow." They cant tell me if they are going to cover it or not. I haven't had this truck for a year yet,and I hope nothing major goes wrong because it looks like I will be on my own.

Update from Jul 4, 2012: ford finaly fixed the window! the truck had to go back three times to get the eletrical right, it took about a month for the hole thing
