Truck is equipped with Ford's "mobile office package" and foldaway console shifter. After being parked overnight, the truck started up as normal, but the shift position light would begin rapidly blinking when moved into drive. After a few seconds, the shifter would return itself to park. This occurred with reverse as well, and the truck would not move in gear, with no pedestrian sounder/reverse warning beeper audible in gear. After spending an afternoon resetting the SYNC module and unplugging the battery with no success, all 7,000 lbs of truck had to be extracted from an underground parkade and towed to the dealer. The truck was examined the next day, where the truck apparently decided to resume working as normal. Despite this, the dealer scheduled a shifter replacement as this is apparently common enough for Ford to issue a TSB. Total downtime was one week, mostly waiting time for the hopefully revised shifter module to show up at the dealer.

I don't know why Ford opted to go out of their way to engineer a failure point into their trucks, but a normal column shifter would have solved all of this before it began.
