2006 for Freestyle 120000 miles, I was backing up car engine started to race. Had foot on brake not on accelerator. If foot was not on brake would have hit parked car behind me. Backed up and had to keep brake applied to keep car from moving in reverse to quickly. Car then stalled. I restarted and went into "safe mode". drove to automechanic unable to drive over 40mph. Mechanic looking at throttle body as cause.

Vehicle lunges at idle, especially on hot days when A/C is running. Almost ran over attendant at oil change location. This has occurred about 30 times since we have owned the car. The dealer has no knowledge of other Freestyles with this problem, but many other Freestyle owners do, as does the Ford corporation.

At least once daily, my 2006 Ford Freestyle lurches forward when I am going forward or backward at a low speed, such as pulling in to or out of a parking space, or going from a complete stop. Today as I entered the road from a complete stop at a traffic light, the car jerked forward, I heard a noise and the orange wrench shaped light came on.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle would surge and abnormally accelerate forward or in reverse without depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who discovered that whomever performed the most recent oil change on the vehicle added incorrect fluid, causing the transmission to become defective. The dealer made repairs to the vehicle but the issue was not remedied. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who stated that they would contact her at a later date. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure and current mileage was 84,000.

  • 56,000 miles
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact was at a complete stop when the vehicle abnormally accelerated with the illumination of the wrench warning light. The contact attempted to maneuver the vehicle and ended up crashing into a ditch. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer who replaced the wiring harness on the right rear engine compartment. The battery and the shock mount was also replaced and the contact was advised to have the throttle body and crank sensor replaced. The contact stated that the throttle body and crank shaft sensor were previously replaced and denied having the components replaced a second time. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number: PE11018 (vehicle speed control) that could possible have been related to the failure. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000.

Both times this has happened, it has been very hot 100+ degrees outside, and the vehicle had been parked, idling for a few minutes (5-15 mins). Upon putting car in gear, the vehicle engine surged. Luckily the foot was on the brake pedal. While experiencing these problems, vehicle has died twice, and tends to do it more at low, idle only speeds, for example while parking or pulling out of the driveway. Once, we were driving from out of town, and the vehicle was sluggish on acceleration, and never seemed to switch gears. We made it home, then let it cool, and it ran fine for several days. About a week later, having the same issues. Going to take it into the Ford dealer tomorrow and have them look at it, referencing the NHTSA investigation into the Ford Freestyles.

My 2006 Ford Freestyle frequently lunges forward without the accelerator being applied. It most frequently happens as the brake lets up but also happens just as it is being put into drive. No collisions yet, just a few scares.

  • 36,935 miles
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. While attempting to place the gear in drive, the vehicle lunged forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the throttle body was replaced. Approximately three years after the vehicle was repaired it began to lunge backwards while in reverse and forward while in drive. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number: PE11018 (vehicle speed control) which may be related to the failure. The contact also stated while turning the steering wheel either to the right or left the vehicle would make a clicking sound within the front axle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician stated the front driver and passengers side cv joints needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 36,935.

The car will surge on it's own at different times: Sitting at a red light ~normal misc idling, while in reverse, while making full turns. It will also sometimes die right after the surge, but not every time. It is worse in the summer during high temps, but will sometimes do it in colder temps as well. It does this when you have your foot on the brake, also when it has been in parked (while idling). At a drive thru window on one occasion, it surged over 5 times and was restarted over 5 different times, all at same drive thru window. (maybe 10 minutes at the window). Additionally the driver front seat, seat warmer has stopped working, the keypad on the driver's car door to open the car doors will not function, several lights inside the dash do not light up and/or very dim, the middle row seat 2/3, the seat on the left side will not fold down.

We are having concern with our Freestyle. On numerous occasions I will be parked, in the school pick-up line, for example. When I release the brake, the car jolts forward without even pressing the accelerator. This can be terrifying, as it always seems to be in a situation where there are a lot of people whom could be injured. This also happens frequently in parking lots. This is a possible throttle malfunction? I am bringing to the mechanic to see if there is something they can do. Because I have noticed there are other complaints regarding this issue, I thought I should state my concern as well. Hopefully if a recall is needed to ensure safety of this vehicle, this will be thoroughly investigated. Thank you.

My 2006 Ford Freestyle started to jerk and when stopped at a stop sign or pulling into traffic would accelerate uncontrollably. I had the throttle switch replaced only a month after I got the car and it began to do the same thing shortly after and the warning said misfire so I had new spark plugs put in. The following summer same problems but this time I had to have new coils put in. I drove the car for a month and while driving in traffic it would completely shut down, almost causing an accident, this happened about four times. It now has completely shut down and will not start at all. I have replaced batteries, taken it to several dealers and all say there is nothing they can do that it is "probably" a computer problem, I have since parked the car as it is unsafe and undrivable. Help!

Purchased a 2006 Ford Freestyle in April 2010 with 45,831 miles on it. The car is used for transportation to and from work, errands, and leisure. Since purchasing the car, we have experienced unexplained surges in the engine resulting in the rpms to increase and a sudden jerking movement while in drive or reverse. The surges have become more frequent occurring on a daily basis during warm weather especially during the summer months. We have been worried about the car lunging into another vehicle while parking/backing out of a parking space or while waiting at a light or stuck in traffic on the highway. On 6-13-11 at 5 pm est, while on our way home from work, the car unexpectedly surged and moved forward into another car while we were waiting at a traffic light. We have researched online to see if any other Freestyle owners have experienced this problem and to our surprise, there have been a lot of complaints regarding this issue but no statements or recalls have been made by Ford. We have not been able to afford to try and have the throttle body fixed to remedy the situation. This is something we were not expecting considering the car only had 45,851 miles on it when we bought it last year.

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle would surge forward abnormally, most often when the air conditioner was activated. In addition, the when the air conditioner was activated, the vehicle would decelerate to 20 mph and would not accelerate any higher. The contact stated that as she was allowing a passenger to exit the vehicle, the vehicle surged forward abnormally, causing the passenger to twist and sparin an ankle. The dealer informed the contact that there were no related recalls to the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The current mileage was approximately 118,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Have a 2006 Ford Freestyle. Acceleration surges from idle, mostly in reverse but sometimes in drive, have increased in duration over the past few weeks. Last night it surged about 10 feet backing out of a parking place and came very close to hitting a pedestrian. The wrench light came on last night but was off when ignition turned off and restarted. Now the engine light is on. I am really afraid to drive the car. Read about the investigation into surges on this model.

Our Freestyle has problems with surging for over a year. The rpms will go up and the car will try to jump ahead when the brake is on. Other times it will surge while driving and the dashboard may go completely blank. It has been worked on many times, but the problem always comes back. Different sensors and resets of the computer have been done.

Vehicle (Ford Freestyle) lunges forward both in drive and in reverse, when foot is on brake, particularly when backing up, but also when shifting into drive. Vehicle accelerates even when foot is pushing down on brake!!! RPM's shoot up and vehicle lunges forward, significant distance, w/O warning. Little to no control over acceleration when it does this. Occurs approx. Every other day (3-4 times per day on the days it does occur)! nothing initiated this reaction in/from car. Concerned it will cause me to rear end someone or run into their vehicle when trying to back up in a parking lot, etc.
