While driving home on the highway - our check engine light started flashing and the car started running roughly. We pulled over to the side and had the car towed to a repair shop. The mechanic determined the trouble was with piston #3. After he pulled the plug out head, he could see a hole in the piston. The estimate for a whole engine replacement is $6,300. The car is only worth about $9,000 on Kelly Blue Book, but we have to fix it.

The car does have 86,000 miles, but not all of those were on the engine. There is no way that a car should have this kind of catastrophic failure when it is only two years old. After calling Ford to ask if they can tell how many miles the engine has on it (as a lot of them were driven on electricity), and they said it did not matter as the power train warranty is based on the odometer. I feel that if they give you a separate warranty for the hybrid system, then they should only consider actual miles on the engine and not the car. the engine completely shuts off when the hybrid system takes over.

Update from Jul 31, 2017: I talked to a service manager at Borman Ford in Las Cruces, NM and he clearly stated "the mileage on the odometer is what we go by". They will not help. How can they offer a separate warranty for the hybrid system if they do not monitor the mileage differently. I am confident it is not a matter of can they pull the electrical miles, it is a matter of they do not want to deal with it. No car should develop a hole in the piston.
