In the Ford Taurus X (2008 and 2009) years, the coils (there are six of them) go bad and once they go bad, they cause the ECM to short.
Ford Dealers give 2 conflicting reasons: 1) the coil goes bad, shorts, and then shorts the ECM; or 2) the ECM goes bad and shorts a coil.
Either way, according to the Ford issued TSB, the ECM has to be replaced ($800 - $1000) and ALL SIX coils have to be replaced as they acknowledge that it is likely to happen again if "new" coils are not used. The coils cost between $150 - $200 EACH.
Thus, the repair for this KNOWN issue, including labor, costs over $2500.
