I have been driving over 50 yrs. Have never had an accident. I was driving straight on a street. no vehicle in front, behind or next to me. All of a sudden I heard a loud bang. The drivers side air bag deployed tearing my drivers side seat. After all the smoke and powder settled, I realized the air bag exploded for no reason. My 2004 thunderbird is a show car. I have won several trophies with it. It is spotless in and out. not even a scratch. The engine is spotless. I had to take it to a car show on aug. 9, 2016 to see if I could win another trophy. I took the vehicle to my local Ford dealership, they looked at it, found no dents or scratches and they could not explain why the air bag exploded. They told me they could not fix it. I contacted my insurance and they stated that since I was not in an accident, the repairs would not be covered. I contacted Ford Corporation and was advised that they would not cover or help me with the repairs. I suffered bruising under my left armpit and left arm. They did not seem to care. I then contacted an auto upholstery shop and they said they could sew the drivers seat for 400.00 Ford told me the air bag is no longer carried by them so it would be sewed up with no air bag anymore. Somehow I feel that Ford Corporation is liable. I have pulled up many, many drivers side airbags that have exploded for no reason. I am writing Ford Corporation a letter and depending on their answer, I might have to seek legal advice.
