The engine failure stranded my 16-year-old child on the side of the road.

Hyundai took weeks to decide if it would cover the engine failure.

It took 1½ months to get the replacement engine.

Hyundai customer support was vague about whether it would provide a loaner car or cover a rental car.

Sonata

  • Automatic transmission
  • 16,000 miles

I bought a 2015 Hyundai Sonata with 16,000+ miles, from a colleague that was in a fender bender. The FOB key was missing. Since I was told it had very low miles, I didn't even think there were any issues with the engine. When I finally got a key from the dealer and tried to start it, I realized the motor was seized and it wouldn't start. I towed it to the dealer. After 6 weeks they told me the motor was shot and it needed a new motor. They also said it was not under warranty. Their advertised 10 year 100,000 mile warranty was not for the vehicle, BUT it was for the 1st owner. Since I was the second owner. I was screwed. I had never heard of that. The vehicle was NOT under warranty, it was the owner who had the warranty. What BS. So Hyundai knows they make crappy vehicles and they used legal fine print to get around the warranty issue. The dealer said they had 25-30 engine replacements to do on similar vehicles, due to the same issue. ITs now been over 3 months and the car is still at the dealership. I tried calling the Hyundai factory directly. After 2 weeks of more delays, they sent me a letter and called to tell me the same crap. I was not covered under their 100k / 10 year warranty for my 6 year old 16,000 mile Sonata. I am very frustrated and want everyone to know how devious and deceiving Hyundai Motors are, and to discourage others from ever buying a Hyundai. They have a crappy warranty program and thus has a sh*tty resale value. DO NOT BUY A HYUNDAI EVER. BUYER BEWARE.
