This is a complaint that mimics the current recall 16V628000 from Hyundai on 8/30/2016, for their 2016 Tucson transmission problems of the engine/transmission where it will disengage. When driving and pressing on accelerator the engine revs, but the transmission seems to be in neutral (even though in Drive). It has happened to me on my 2012 after I made a gradual right hand turn around a ramp at about 25 mph . I had come OUT of the turn and tried to accelerate when nothing happened. The engine rev'd to about 4k, I immediately let off gas thinking I had bumped the gear shift into neutral or it had somehow popped out of gear. NOPE. Light on dash still said "D" and the gear shifter was in the proper position. I let it coast for a while and then tried accelerating again. This time it worked fine. NO CODES GENERATED ON OBDII SCANNER. (2 cycles of on/off before checking for codes when I got home).

After searching this site, I finally found others with the same problem my Tucson has. It is a random problem of sometimes hanging between gears when shifting during normal driving. This allows the engine to rev up to a high rpm and then it will shift without jerking and continue normally. I did extensive travel with my job and put a lot of miles on my Tucson quickly. I bought it new in 2012 and talked to the service department when this problem started. They would check and reset the computer and it seemed to work for a little while and it would happen again. I am guessing this started around 30k or 40k miles. At 90k, I was passing vehicle on the parkway and I think this slipping probably happened and over revved my engine. My engine started knocking and losing power. I had to be hauled to the dealer and they replaced my engine promptly. I extended my warranty and the problem seemed to go away with the new engine. As my warranty extension expired, the problem returned. I now have 176k on my Tucson and it is still happening. I am looking into stabilizers and additives for the transmission fluid but have not tried any as of yet.

Rpms jump to 7K with no engine acceleration, engine "revs but no change in speed. Usually lasts a couple of seconds while needle gyrates. No lights come on. The problem is getting worse: several times a week for the last 5 months and more dangerous, especially in highway driving, switching lanes, etc. I've taken it to the dealer twice in the last several weeks. "We can't find it, there's no record of it on computer, we can't replicate the problem..." There doesn't appear to be a clear pattern since it occurs at slow speeds as well as highway driving. Common element seems to be when my foot is bearing down on the accelerator and the transmission seems to "slip." Meanwhile the dependability of the car is becoming a worry.

I've issued this complaint under the Engine Problem/Surging too, because I am not sure if it is the engine or if it is the transmission. It almost feels like the transmission is slipping. When we are traveling along at various speeds (from 30 or so all the way up to 50), when we press on the accelerator, the RPM's skyrocket into 4-5K but there is no increase in speed. It feels like the car is not in drive. In fact, the first time this happened, I remember looking down at the shift to make sure it had not slipped into neutral. It had not.

This has occurred dozens of times. I've taken our car in twice for them to fix this issue. They have returned it each time saying that they couldn't find a problem nor could they replicate the issue. This is getting old and makes us very nervous driving our SUV. We intentionally bought this, our first Hyundai, because we thought it would be very reliable. So far, we are disappointed and probably will never purchase one again.
