Owner put vehicle in park mode and went to mailbox. Car remained in park mode for a time, but then threw itself into reverse mode. Unoccupied vehicle backed into the street from the owner's driveway and circled back into the neighbor's yard. It traveled a long way across the neighbor's yard and did not stop until it struck a tree, resulting in over $3,100 damage to the car in the tailgate region. After reporting incident to manufacturer they sent a response letter that said to turn it into owner's insurance because driver did not deploy the emergency brake, turn off engine and take out keys.

I first reported this back in October 1997. I had left my Jeep Grand Cherokee in park with the engine running in front of a convenience store. I went inside for approximately 1 minute and upon exiting saw my Jeep moving in reverse out of the parking lot headed for a 4 lane highway. I ran after my car to stop it and upon opening the driver's side door was hit by it and thrown head first into the pavement. The car then crossed 2 lanes of traffic and hit a vehicle stopped at a stop light. Damage was done to both vehicles. I had a large hemotoma on my head and extensive neck bruising and a herniated disc in my neck. Jeep was contacted and they sent an engineer to look at the car but couldn't find anything wrong with it. Allstate sent an engineer as well. This was a leased vehicle and is probably being driven by someone else as I type this. I find it amusing that 4 years later - this is all coming out when I was probably one of the first to have this happen to them.

My wife drove up to and opened a gate. She drove through the gate. On the other side, she stopped the car, placed it in park, left the driver's door open, the SUV started in reverse toward a building. The driver's side door was sprung and damaged from hitting the gatepost. My wife was able to catch up with the vehicle, get in and put it in park and stop the vehicle before it hit the building. The door sustained $ 1876 damage and we have been surcharged on our insurance since the occurrence. We feel it was the manufacturer's defect, not ours.
