This clearly is a manufacturer's defect. The plastic tabs holding the pin in place failed and broke. There are many many instances of this complaint on the internet. Should be a recall as this is a dangerous condition that can happen any time. When the restraint deploys it can cause head injuries or could cause a wreck if it happens when driving.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 82,642 miles

Headrest deployed forward while seat was empty. The seat is more or less unusable. This was apparently due to a failed plastic bracket. The only fix is to replace item. At $1600 plus labour.

My vehicle was parked with the engine running while I was loading groceries in the trunk. Suddenly, I heard a bang coming from the interior. I thought a grocery bag fell or one of the soft drinks popped. Finally, I located the problem - it was the front passenger headrest. It had deployed. Basically, the front cushy part had moved forward. I had to research and found out the headrest is designed to deploy during an accident so that it prevents whiplash. Theoretically, you are supposed to push it back and latch in place but because mine had deployed improperly it had broken a plastic piece. I came across other posts of people reporting same problem. And like other people Jeep did not care. I guess it hasn't happened enough to warrant a class action lawsuit or recall.

They are super expensive to replace!! Overall, the vehicle has other problems and I won't be buying a Jeep ever again.
