gas burps up after the nozzle shuts off. Does it at most gas stations. Something about a defective check valve. Is there a recall?

If I ever allow my gas tank to reach the point of “full” while I am adding/pumping fuel into my Jeeps gas tank it results in LARGE amounts of gasoline regurgitating back at me and spilling all over the side of my jeep. Onto the ground and also often on my hands and clothing. Right after the first occurrence I looked the symptoms up within the same year/make/model of jeep and found numerous others that had the exact same problem. I made an appt. with my local dealership to only be informed that although this issue was investigated, a recall was not declared and I would need to pay out of pocket. I was too disgusted and frustrated to listen further about potential costs. Besides, I would never even consider having the “Steal-er-ship” do any work on my jeep beyond warranty!!!

I bought my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited used and was driving from VA to TX with it the next day. I was trailering it home when I bought it and decided to fuel it up so I could leave right when I got home and when the tank hit full, gas started shooting out of the spout. I had to stop it manually and there was fuel everywhere. This problem continued so, I had to estimate how much fuel to put in so it wouldn't overflow.

I called the local dealership and they new about the problem and said to bring it in and they would fix it for free. At the time I was experiencing an engine knock so they wouldn't repair the fuel issue until the engine was running properly. They said it required an emissions check on the fuel cap and the engine has to be running properly. When I was ready to take it in, I called them and they would no longer fix it for free. I just stopped filling the tank for the time being. A while later a code popped up for a fuel vapor leak. It went away on its own and afterwards I filled up twice with no issues, but then it started doing it again. Still doing it now.

This is dangerous as hell! EVERY TIME I have filled her up since I bought her the gas has splashed back out of the fill hole; onto the paint and the bumper, the pavement and me! I've figured out how to stand back - mostly - but sometimes it splashes more than others and I still get hit! This can cause death - having gas on me, pavement around gas pumps and on my vehicle! Not to mention ruin my paint and bumper. WTH?

I sold two antique cars to fund the purchase of a clean low mileage used Jeep Wrangler. Neither of the old vehicles spilled a drop of fuel when filling up, nor does any other vehicle I have ever owned. When this particular Jeep dumps between a pint and a quart of fuel all down the side and the ground, it's a major insult to the already near-deadly injury of the abysmal 11mpg it is getting according to the dash computer.

After this first started happening, I've gotten into the habit of setting the gas nozzle to the slowest fill speed when refueling. It still overshoots, but it's not a gusher. It is definitely a nuisance and a hazard for anyone that is not aware of the problem.

Reading the forums, this appears to be a known problem, and Chrysler has replaced the tank in some vehicles. But I bought this as a pre-owned vehicle, and don't know if I have any recourse other than having the work done myself.

I should have done more research before buying this Jeep it has been a nightmare. I cannot get it smogged after replacing the purge solenoid, esim, vapor canister, seals, the inlet check valve and checking all the lines. I don't know if the evap system is related to the fuel blow out problem but I'd assume it is as the dealer said i need to now replace the tank. Please if anyone has any advice...

Here's a link of where I found about the gas overfill issue and potential fire and hazard to my health and life:

http://www.jeepproblems.com/trends/fuel-overflow/

As far as I can recall, this issue was never fixed when I purchased it back in 2014 (3rd owner).

Update from Mar 15, 2016: Have not received any response from Jeep Chrysler on getting a new fuel tank to alleviate the fuel over-spill due to inlet check valve. the current date as of now is 3/15/2016. Service bulletin service bulletin is 14-001-11

This problem not only sends fuel all over the car and the person filling the tank. It gives you no warning, damages the plastic trim, and even more significant. The check valve problem that causes this also causes the vehicle to fail its EVAP system test so the car cannot pass state inspections without replacing the fuel tank. This is a design flaw that has been a problem for many years. The company should own up to it and replace the tanks!!

This problem is a pain in the butt. I've searched and searched forums. I've been to the dealer, which was where I found out that it would cost $990 in parts and labor to replace my gas tank. Plenty of people are having problems. It's only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt, that's if they haven't already. Not to mention the fact that the gas gets all over my feet, hands, and vehicle.

Dec 202014

Wrangler Sahara 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,157 miles

I bought my Jeep in Dec 2014. The dealer gave it to me with a full tank. Every time since, I had to add fuel, gas spit out all over my vehicle and on the ground. Now I know this had to happen to the dealer when they filled me up, and no one said anything. This is a very dangerous situation. I now know what the problem is due to research, { defective filler neck valve } so for the time being, while waiting for the long overdue recall, I will not fill my tank, maybe go just 3/4 full.

That all being said, shame on Chrysler. This is a problem that has been ongoing for some time now, and I don't know about other models, but Jeep owners are pretty loyal. It's too bad that loyalty isn't given back, especially when peoples lives are in danger. I MAY HAVE JUST BOUGHT MY LAST CHRYSLER. I try to be patriotic, buy American and support this country, but, I don't know, it seems Americans don't care for Americans

This problem sucks. The last 2 times I filled up, it spits a large a amount all over the side, fender flare & bumper. It is 14 degrees today and had to go out and wash off with hot water and dawn to clean the gas off my Jeep. They should have a recall for this problem it could potentially a fire hazard.

I went to the chrysler-Jeep dealer(Tinley park) about the gas gushing out all over the place, they said they didn't see a recall on the gas tank problem.I don't see how the gas is gushing out all over the place, nothing that I did wrong and many, many others have the same problem. Chrysler-Jeep needs to step up and fix this. So this is step 2,step 3 to follow.

I BOUGHT THIS JEEP IN JULY OF 2012 USED FROM A DEALER. IT JUST NOW STARTED SPITTING OUT GAS WHEN THE TANK IS FULL. ITS LIKE IT DOESN'T HAVE A PART TO STOP THE GAS FROM COMING OUT. IT GETS ALL OVER MY JEEP AND GROUND. THE GAS ATTENDANT HAD TO SPRAY A NEUTRALIZER ON THE SPILL. WHAT IS THE DEAL IS IT A RECALL OR NOT?

A fuel leak is a hazard to the driver and the environment. How the government can close an investigation and say that there is no safety issue is beyond me. There are literally thousands of complaints about this problem. Do the right thing and force chrysler to fix the problem before there is a serious accident.
