I called Jeep and asked them to waive the deductible being applied under my extended warranty. They declined. How can a known issue like this one not result in a recall?

Wrangler JK V6

  • Automatic transmission

This is ridiculous. Every time I fill up my car, it overflows. I called Jeep and they don't extend the warranty for my year model, even though they KNOW it is an existing issue that needs to be fixed. This is hazardous! I get my feet, pants, and hands covered in gasoline, my car and the ground get splashed with gas waiting for a spark to occur. I have to go to work smelling like chemicals.

If you build something that has an issue, you fix it Jeep. I was just about to upgrade to a new model, but not now if this is how they are going to stand behind their product.

When filling the vehicle with gas the automatic shutoff doesn't work until AFTER a significant amount of gas has spilled. This is a safety and environmental hazard. It is also a known issue with recalls for other model years. Chrysler, please fix your design flaw! And please fix my Jeep!!

Wrangler Islander V6, 3.8L

We are lifetime Jeep owners (30+). Our 2008 Jeep Wrangler was the first experience with the fuel spill issue. Fortunately it was part of the small recall and the repair made at no cost to us.

We purchased a 2010 (used) and verify maintenance and repair records for it and no sign of issue. Within four months, we are having same problem. Called Chrysler. Told to incur the expense to have it diagnosed by certified repair shop. We did. $112. Called them back with the diagnosis confirming it was a fuel spill issue with tank valve requiring tank to be replaced. $1100.

Reported this back to Chrysler looking for assistance with such a known defect. Was told out of warranty, no recall for this model year and mileage too high. When husband stated that replacing a fuel tank was not a normal wear and tear item, and that this was a known defect, pretty much told standard script.

We voiced that this is a safety concern both environmental and personal (we have school age children and soon-to-be 16 year old drivers); response the same. "Too bad".

This should be a class action lawsuit and we would be happy to participate. We have written diagnosis from service center and printed copies of both online chats with Chrysler. My husband and I both participated in the last phone conversation with the "supervisor" we requested contact us to discuss after frustrating second online chat exchange.

What can we do?

From what I can see on the internet, this is a common problem with Jeeps during this time period. Chrysler has had a lot of complaints and they have done nothing about this. This is dangerous and these vehicles should be recalled.

Wrangler JKU V6

This issue happens anytime I leave the gas to pump on its own and is extremely annoying and unsafe. Any spark could cause a fire – Not cool! Also, whenever a fellow Jeeper gets gas next to me they seem to have the same problem and ask me about it. The recall doesn’t include my year of Jeep, makes me extremely upset.

I get fuel blow back from the tank when removing the fuel nozzle after filling up. This happens during every fill-up and seems to be a quite hazardous problem. I've been told that the fix requires replacement of the entire fuel tank at quite an expense (of course my Wrangler is not under warranty). Due to the potential liability I would think that Chrysler would have initiated a recall before a large class action lawsuit is initiated.

Wrangler Islander Edition 2 DR SPORT V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 18,040 miles

Problem started about 5 months ago. At first I thought it was a station problem as my regular station underwent a huge makeover including new pump equipment. After trying many different stations in IL and IN and doing research on the net, I find it is a widespread problem. Nothing helps the huge gush of gas that pours out of my Jeep EVERY TIME I FILL UP!! . I've tried filling slow, filling manually (not automatic setting on pump nozzle), NOTHING WORKS! I even had my husband fill it just to prove I wasn't a helpless female or dumb blonde. I don't know why it started happening. I bought the vehicle new so I know the complete vehicle history and service.

After filling up yesterday and getting soaked with gasoline again, I had enough! Time to complain and see what happens. This is REALLY a serious issue and needs to be addressed. Somebody is going to get seriously injured if this is not corrected. Many times I see people around gas pumps smoking and now I not only have to watch what I'm doing, I need to make sure nobody around me is doing anything careless that could cause me harm! Email was sent off to Chrysler - waiting for response as well as info from my dealer.

Update from Feb 2, 2015: Contacted Chrysler and took to dealer for inspection. Dealer inspected an found defective tank. New tank was ordered and replaced as a warranty repair. Have been out of state and unable to test, but have had 2 successful fillups with no spilling!! Seems to have resolved my issue...
