I was attempting to drive out of a parking lot (thankfully!) when suddenly, my Jeep 2011 Wrangler engine shut off. The 'electronic throttle system' light came on and was solid red. I was stuck in the middle of the parking lot blocking cars, but luckily was able to turn the Jeep off then restart it with no more light and seemingly no more issues. It is at the mechanic now, but I'm afraid they won't be able to fix anything if they can't re-create the problem. I'm terrified that I will be driving on a busy highway and stall out again over this and cause an accident. At this point, I do not feel safe driving my Jeep anywhere. I hope they figure out what's wrong, and I will report back.

Wrangler Unlimited Sport 3.6L

Brought it to the dealer when I originally thought the oil was leaking. They blamed it on a defective oil filter, changed it, and sent me home.

4 days later while driving on the highway to work the engine shuts off and I panic, as anyone would stuck in the right lane of a highway in NY where you just hope someone is paying attention to you and doesn't hit you.

It was towed to the dealership who then claimed that it was a defective EGR valve. They changed it, and one day later i was sent home with my car.

Less than 12 hours later, again on my way to work, the engine dies on the highway. After the second tow to the dealership they that the motor needs rebuilding. 2 weeks later and $4000 worth of work (no expense to me) they send me home with the car and it seems to be running ok.

I was pretty wary and I haven't felt safe in my own car since. Now, over a month since the original debacle, I am heading back to the dealer because of engine rumbling....

Wrangler Unlimited, 70th Anniversary 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission

Purchased the Jeep from Car Max used and 2 weeks later the engine completely stalled leaving my kids and I stranded late at night out of town. Was towed to Car Max who replaced the battery.

A couple of weeks later, it did it again. Went back to Car Max who replaced the fuel pump and alternator. When we got it back, the interior lights quit working and the horn quit working. Four months later and several other issues, the car stalled again while driving down the road. Nothing would work, the locks, lights, nothing. Car Max sent it straight to the dealer who has had it for 2 weeks. First they said it was the alternator. They had put a brand new Mopar alternator in it just 4 months. The dealer said that since we had been riding the Jeep off-road that the mud could cause the alternators to go out. (So if I use the Jeep like you expect to use a Jeep, I am going to need a new alternator every 4 months) He replaced the alternator but couldn't get the lights or horn and other electrical issues fixed so he opened a Chrysler Star case. I told him numerous times about the TIPM issue I have been reading about and he says he has no idea about all the TIPM problems. Then he calls and says the engineer said to check the TIPM and Cluster. So, I had hopes I would get a new TIPM.

He calls me this morning and says it is not the TIPM but the cluster and he would need it another 2 weeks possibly to get that fixed because of the Thanksgiving holidays. My son drives this Jeep and I know this is going to happen again. I am really concerned as to what to do and want them to replace the TIPM. It is under an extended warranty right now.
