The engine went out with a knocking sound. It slowly died and coasted to a stop, needing to be towed to get it back to town. The car only has about 70,000 miles, so when we were told that the engine was shot, it was quite a shock.

If the car weren't certified pre-owned, then we'd be paying out of pocket, and as it stands right now, I'm still not sure 100% if the replacement of the engine will be covered by the warranty. The cost of the repair would certainly be more than what we would get if we sold the car.

The car has been maintained, and an engine should never die at 70,000 miles. That's ridiculous. It seems that this is a problem with its manufacture, based on what I've been reading, and that I'm not alone in this problem. If not for this MASSIVE problem, I've otherwise been happy with the car.

Forte SX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 131,000 miles

I was driving home from work when I heard a loud knocking. The cars rpms went to 0 and the car died at highway speeds. I was able to pull the car off the road. I had the car towed to the dealership, where the car was purchased. They told me the engine was blown. The car was well maintained and had every oil change on time.

Forte SX 2.4L

My car was built in 2012 but is a 2013. I had just had the oil changed at the dealership on May 24th and on June 9, and only 200 miles later my engine seized on the freeway in the middle lane of one of the most dangerous interchanges in Chattanooga. (http://newschannel9.com/news/local/transportation-commissioner-i-24i-75-split-considered-worst-intersection-in-state).

I had the car towed to the dealer but it was after hours so I had to wait until Monday to hear I have a faulty engine. They told me they know they put bad engines in their cars but because I have a Forte not and an Optima, I am probably screwed. I am even more screwed because I am the second owner and the car just turned 5 yrs old on Feb. 1.

I have reached out to KIA corporate. This is the most ridiculous situation I have ever found myself in. It seems that perhaps KIA produced so few Forte SX in 2012 that they have not been included in the class action case. I think that is a terrible oversight. If the 2.0 and 2.4L engines have problems it should include all models of KIA cars with that size engine. Also KIA should not be allowed to hold second owners to the 5yr or 60k miles either. If a car is produced with engines that blow and seize due to a manufacturing debacle, all owners should be entitled to replacement engines if under the 100k.

Reading all the stories about Forte's blowing up it seems like oil changes actually cause the inevitable blow up. Must rattle that debris around a bit every time they remove the filter and oil. KIA really needs to step up and replace some engines. My beautiful, perfectly maintained car seized 2 weeks after the dealer changed her oil. Only 51k miles on her. A 2013 model, just past the 5 yr mark. KIA still deciding my fate. Don't know about other folks but I can't afford to just throw a car away when it breaks, especially one that is supposed to make it 100k or 10 yrs.

C'mon KIA and KIA dealers!!! Honor you pledge that cars will live to 10 yrs or 100k.

My car was purchased at the dealership that changed my oil and even though it was not me that purchased it, it is still the car they sold and they still made the money on it. But I know once they sold it, they were done with it. Small claims court may be in my future. Wish me luck.

Forte EX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 93,000 miles

Was driving home from work and the car engine blew. Once I had the car towed to JTs Kia in Columbia, South Carolina the service department took a while to tell me what was actually wrong with the car. Had to go to the dealership to see what the problem with the car is, they finally told me. My car had a rod blown in it but it took almost two weeks for them to actually tell me what's wrong with the car. My car should have been under its power train warranty with it being under 100K and not five years old until the 21 of November. To see that Kia would not take care of a loyal customer that made there payments on time and early for the past four years makes no sense.
