Brake Lights Work Opposite

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2005 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2005 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for power steering problems, up to 10 years/100k miles.

As of early 2013 the NHTSA had 300+ steering complaints on file for the 2005 G6, with 12 crashes & 4 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2005 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2005 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

I bought the car end of December. On my way home the evening of January 24th 2017, I was driving the highway home at 55 mph and went to slow down because a semi pulled out in front of me & I noticed the car behind me was not reducing their speed. Then they start flashing their bright lights on and off and laying on their horn, so I pull over. They're cussing me saying that for the last 10 miles my brake lights were on, until I went to tap the brakes and they would go off like they had a damn mind of their own! So, I called my father in law to come follow me home so I would not cause an accident. Went to put car in gear and my damn gear shifter would not come out of park! I shut the car off let it sit about 30 minutes started back up. Then my damn ignition got stuck. Continued cranking over even after it was started. Seems to be a continuous thing with my car. Now on top of a few other issues that I need to address in separate complaints! Definitely, going to looking for another car because I am not gonna keep dipping money into this damn thing and it not resolve the issue!

I started having problems with my breaks after a couple other drivers had stopped me to let me know. My dad and brothers looked at it and thought that it may be the switch inside the car that helps the break pad move. My dad bought a new switch (original part) for $60.00 and replaced it. The problem was fixed....for a short while. This was around November, and just before Christmas the breaks started to act up again. My brother has a friend he works with that used to be a GM mechanic and we had him take a look at it. he checked EVERYTHING! Fuses, wires, even the same switch. He couldn't figure it out either. After he put the switch back on the breaks worked fine. Every so often I'll start my car and the break lights will come on but when I get in I'll pump the break rapidly and they will stay off and work normally. The problem seems to occur when it rains or snows. I might be crazy to think that, but I'm taking every thins into consideration. I think your best bet is to take it to a mechanic or the place where you bought the car, and have them look at it. I was told that they can hook it up to a computer and it will spit out codes for everything that's wrong. I have yet to do this because the problem just started to happen this week. But that is going to be my next step. Yes they will charge you about $80 just to look at it and who knows how much it will be to fix it. But it is a safety hazard.

I had the same issue, the brake lights constantly stayed on preventing the use of the cruise control as well.

I had in the dealership 3 times to get fixed and finally after replacing a break switch and blaming a after market navigation system, they found a broken wire in the harness that they said was causing the problem.

This car is the biggest piece of S#$% i have ever owned. I have spent close to $4,000 since the warranty ran out in May and now i'm looking at trading it in before i have to pay any more to Pontiac.

I too have have issues with the steering where it does a solid clunk when making left hand turns. I've had the steering shaft replaced twice, and by the way it came back last week.

The keyless remote is horrible as well. If i lock the car using the switch on the door and then unlock it using the keyless remote, the alarm goes off ticking off my neighbors every couple of weeks when i forget about the issue.

The car is up for shocks, tires, alignment, and inspection in 2 months and there is no way in hell i'm dumping another $1500 into this nightmare.

I have had detailed conversations with others when getting my car serviced and 2 of them (driving different models) have had numerous electronic issues with their cars as well.

I'm a small business owner and i can tell you this, If i sell a brand new computer desktop and you request a special CD-ROM drive and i put it in then I'm responsible for it. I can't go back to you and say well it doesn't work because of the cd-rom drive you chose. I put it in so i have to fix it or reimburse. Pontiac could use some customer service and stop trying to blame its customers for its shotty work / craftsman ship

Been having problems with brake lights for a couple of months now. They work opposite...when i press it turns off. Then when I release....it turns on after a delay of 4-5 seconds. Very dangerous and no one seems to know the problem. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix it? Heard any recall about it?.....Been browsing around and a lot of people are having the same problem on g6 models.....

The brake lights are stuck on when I accelerate and go off when I brake. However, this does not occur all the time. I does happen during the day but it always happens at night. Ive called about ten mechanics and nobody has heard of the problem before. I have gotten pulled over my the police twice and so far have had one ticket.

Since this does not happen consistently, I am having a hard time finding a solution. Any suggestions?
