When braking and coming stop the vehicle will stutter, "diesel" and ultimately die. It is extremely hazardous. It not only occurs during straight-line stops. Several times the vehicle has died in a corner or mid turn and I lost all steering and most brake function as it is dying ! This is a hazard ! I read a TSB “Technical Service Bulletin” online and it outlined my exact issue. Only Subaru called it a "customer concern of very low RPM when coming to a stop". Brilliant wording! They did not call it a hazardous condition that could cause an accident and kill or maim you or a loved one or someone else for that matter, no! It is a customer concern.

They outline my problem exactly except for the part where I am rounding a corner and braking hard and the car simply dies! It stops! Like not rolling! Like dead! Or when I pulled out into traffic and someone did not know how to use a roundabout and my vehicle dies in the middle of the roundabout awaiting a T-bone accident. Now I know my vehicle has 145K miles on it, but they have built a fix for the problem! I got lucky and it simply did not happen in the first 100K ! But since I have more miles than that, go ahead and get in an accident, we (Subaru) do not care. They describe what is happening except that they sugar coated it by calling it a "customer concern". Not only that ... My vehicle is a 2012 and in October of 2013 they came out with a fix for it... Not a recall just a fix for a known problem !!!

BTW a TSB is the manner that Subaru utilizes to avoid an actual recall. "Well we sent out a tech bulletin" Subaru Corporate explained to me today that this is a service bulletin for dealers only not consumers. The fact is that they know they have this problem! No one has died yet that I know of, so they are not willing to repair it. It is absurd!

I am going to go to work on Social media as much as possible and start a campaign. I thought Subaru was a different company, that they would stand up for what is right, that they actually would support their product in a situation like this. But alas I was misguided in my thinking. They are no better than any other Corporate carcass hunter looking for prey in their customers! For what it is worth I simply informed them that this was my first Subaru and my last!

Subject: Engine came apart at 90,000 miles May 2017 - 75K miles - Purchased used (first Subaru) Oct 2017 - 88K miles - All 90K mile service recommendations performed at dealership - cost $1K Nov 2017 - 91K miles - car broke down in a remote part of west Texas going 80mph Dec 2017 - $1,300 Cost just to diagnose, this doesn't fix anything or put it back together, Subaru of America covered this expense. Jan 2018 - Diagnosed: Technicians notes: “MOTOR CAME APART AT HIGH REV SPEED, 1 PISTON CRACKED, 1 PISTON GONE. EXCESSIVE METAL SCATTERED THROUGH COMPLETE ENGINE AND INTAKE MANIFOLD”
Service manager notes: A mechanical failure of the guide is likely what occurred, but we are unable to confirm due to damage to motor.  I’ve never seen one this badly damaged before nor is this common
Subaru of America Notes: "the engine was covered under the 60k mile Powertrain Warranty which was active until the 60k mile mark was reached. Your 2012 Outback was already beyond  that warranty coverage"

My 2012 Subaru Outback with 122,000 miles stalls after sudden stops. It feels like a car with a clutch that has not engaged. Mostly happens with the car has just started running. Every morning going to work when I come to a stop light and had stop quick, it has stalled. It always starts right back up after putting it into park.

The dealer covered under the drive train part of the warranty, however they did not reprogram the engine correctly and I had to return to the dealer the next week because of dropping rpm and rough idle. The dealer told me this is a known problem with this car.

Though they fixed the problem, the engine is idling rough again and now I am having starter issues.

On coming to a stop, the vehicle often stutters and dies. It will restart, but intermittently repeats the same problem. The dealer said it is due to faulty torque converter that does not disengage properly on stopping. The dealer quoted a cost of $1800.00 to fix. Said they rarely saw something like this. Vehicle is a 2012 Outback with 82,000 miles (mostly freeway). After research, seems like a number of complaints involve this condition. Saw in another complaint, Subaru knows of the problem (prior service bulletin #60-90-13 seen on another post). Thought about fixing since the car is only 3 years old. However, don't like the idea of putting another "faulty" design back in that could result in the same issue.
