Bought the vehicle new in late 2018. At about 24,000 miles, the vehicle required roughly a pint of engine coolant ever 4000 miles. I took the vehicle back to Subaru twice under warranty, and each time they told me that that was normal for an Outback with a 2.5 liter engine. The vehicle started using small amounts of coolant from about 6000 miles. They checked the vehicle twice for coolant leaks and said there were none and just come in as needed to top off the coolant when it got low. I have owned Japanese four cylinder vehicles for over 30 years and never had a vehicle requiring addition of coolant every 4000 miles roughly. Usually once a year , only a small amount of coolant is needed due to a small amount of normal evaporation.

I spoke to an excellent independent mechanic in Scottsdale and he told me that based on said symptoms, it was probably a head gasket leak, which was common in older Subaru models. When I bought the vehicle, they assured me that the redesigned engine had no oil usage or head gasket issues of the past. Subaru is hiding a major engine problem by saying that my coolant loss problem was normal. I traded in the vehicle at about 64,000 miles for a new Korean vehicle . My new vehicle with a 4 cylinder engine required absolutely no coolant after 4000 mile interval. It would not surprise me if eventually the complaints will start piling up and there is a forced recall.
