CarComplaints.com Notes: The Camry Hybrid's first year is a mixed bag of brake actuators failing and power issues. The hybrid version even shares the same excessive oil consumption as its non-hybrid counterpart. And it hardly gets enough fuel efficiency gains to warrant the extra costs up-front or during repairs.

Toyota seemed to get their act together with later model years, so if you're looking for a used Camry Hybrid I suggest looking there.

Camry Hybrid CA24 Hybrid

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

WENT TO TOYOTA DEALER BECAUSE THE WARRANTY FOR THE HYBRID SYSTEM THAT INCLUDES THE BATTERY PACK SAYS IT'S 8 YEARS OR 100,000 MILES, WHICH EVER OCCURS FIRST. MY 2007 CAMRY HYBRID WAS BOUGHT IN MARCH 2007 AND HAS 85,494 MILES, YET THE TOYOTA DEALER SAYS MY CAR WAS REGISTERED IN NOVEMBER 2006 AND EXCEEDS THE 8 YEAR LIMIT BY A FEW MONTHS, THEREFORE THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE BATTERY PACK.

IS THERE ANY ONE OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP ME? PLEASE LET ME KNOW WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A LOT OF $$$$$$$$!!!!!!!

IF I CAN'T GET TOYOTA TO REPLACE THIS YOU CAN BE SURE THAT THIS IS THE LAST TOYOTA HYBRID I WILL BUY AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I CAN NOT TO BUY ONE EITHER!!!!!!!

Camry Hybrid 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 131,731 miles

I took my 07 Camry Hybrid in to the Ken Shaw location in Toronto on March 07, 2015 to have it checked for a "check hybrid system" warning light and a "vsc check" warning light. The car would not stay started. However I was able to drive it about 4 blocks on the hybrid battery before it cut out.

Once at the dealership I was told it was the 12v battery and I needed to pay $500 to replace it. I was not shown any readouts or failed tests. I found it odd to tell me to pay up front. Why not test it with a new one to see if that resolves the problem. The Service manager said no I would have to pay plus I was looking at $210 for the service inspection when I originally signed for $110 service inspection. No explanation as to the increase. I spoke with the tech and he then tested the battery with a special tester. Once complete said "pass" and that it was maintaining the charge.

I felt I was being taken for a ride at this point and told the service manager that it was not the auxiliary battery. He said he will check it Monday. I received a call from the tech that Saturday before they closed telling me that they checked the hybrid battery and that there was not a big enough variance between the cells to warrant it a bad hybrid battery. He said he would keep looking on Monday.

I received a call from the service manager on Monday explaining the same thing the tech told me, that they checked the hybrid battery and as long as there was not a greater variance between the cells of .3 than it was ok. He said it was fine and that it must be another issue. I asked if he had switched the auxiliary battery to see if that helped. He said he had not and that it was not likly the problem. The tech told me found that most of the error codes come from a bad auxiliary battery, so I don't know why they would rule that out completely by switching the battery.

I contacted TCI Toyota Canada to have them asset in this matter. They had a technician from head office communicating to the tech at the dealer. I was told that he could not send any info that "both" his computers were down. Kinda convenient. Once a report was sent not sure by which method fax or email, I was told that the battery was dead, that two of the cells were to low to recharge. The service manager at the Ken Shaw location said if I want my hybrid battery boosted, I would have to pay $500 for that and that I'm looking at $1500 min by the time were done and that still might not solve the problem.

I was very dissatisfied with that response. No training in service just telling me what I have to pay regardless if that fixes my problem or not. He seemed more concerned with his bottom line than helping the customer. I called another service manager at another Toyota location in Toronto and was told that these hybrid batteries don't usually go. He said did they show you a print out saying the hybrid battery failed? No they didn't. He said to contact Head office again, that they should be showing you the read out of the failed test.

My Camry 07 is at 212,000km. He said most of the taxis that have ever had the hybrid battery replaced at his dealership were at 350,000km+. The warranty says 160,000km or 8yrs which ever comes first. My car is 8yrs old and over the warranty by 50,000km.

I have already been lied to by the service manager at Ken Shaw by telling me I need a new auxiliary battery for $500 before even testing it. I was told by him that my hybrid battery was fine. Now as of yesterday March 10, 2015 I was told by the service manager at Ken Shaw Toyota that they would no longer be dealing with head office and that they would not be helping me in the matter. I was told its $3600 for a new battery plus $500-$600 for the installation as well as replacement of the auxiliary battery for $500 not to mention that your air flow sensor needs replaced.

$4600 to just see if that solves the problem without any confirmed diagnosis being shown to the customer is just unacceptable. I asked why they would not be helping me and his response was "they don't want to put themselves in a corner they can't get out of" I have lost all trust in this dealership and have lost my confidence in Toyota. I don't want to deal with this dealership and feel like I have been cheated and taken for a ride. Telling me they cannot help me and won't be dealing with head office is the worst customer service experience I have ever had. Im trying to have this issue escalated at head office "Toyota Canada and it is falling on deaf ears.
