This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Vsc/ABS skid control ECU failure. My vsc/trac sensor and ABS lights have been going on and off for about a week. Two days ago I was at a stop sign and began to accelerate when my skid light came on the gas pedal became unresponsive for about 3-5 seconds. An oncoming bus had to slam on it's brakes and swerve to avoid a collision. I had my two children in the car and we were all very shaken. I took the car to my Toyota dealer today, Toyota of dallas, and was quoted a price of $4,500 by dan lawson, asst svc mgr, to fix the ECU/ABS computer. I felt the price was outrageous and went to the NHTSA site to complain. I was shocked to see the number of complaints on this very dangerous part. I am also outraged by the price quoted by my Toyota dealer. It's seems that others have at least been quoted prices $2000-3000 less than Toyota of dallas. Toyota needs to do something about this immediately. How many people will have to lose their lives before this problem is corrected"?"
The traction control and vsc trac light come on. Vsc controls the anti-lock braking system. Took the vehicle to Toyota dealership (town and country Toyota, charlotte, nc). This dealer says a new skid control computer is required. Upon researching various consumer websites, this appears to be a common defect. See tundrasolutions.com for specific references to this. It appears that NHTSA has already filed many similar complaints from consumers. As a result of this finding, purchase and installation of the skid control computer has been postponed.
