Takata airbags cause recall of 85,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles to replace passenger inflators.

— Toyota is recalling about 65,000 vehicles as part of an ongoing Takata airbag inflator recall process, this time to replace front passenger airbag inflators that were previously replaced with Takata non-desicated inflators.

  • 2003-2005 Toyota Tundra
  • 2002-2005 Lexus SC

The inflators are at risk of exploding due to ammonium nitrate, a propellant that degrades over time as it's exposed to humidity, heat and moisture.

Although the previous recall used new replacement Takata airbag inflators, this latest recall will use inflators supplied by a company other than Takata.

It means another trip to dealerships for repairs, but it should be the last time for the frontal passenger airbags. The automaker says to watch for recall notices in January 2019.

Concerned owners with questions should call Toyota at 800-331-4331 or Lexus at 800-255-3987.
