CarComplaints.com Notes: You don't want to get 2009 and 2010 Altima owners started about their cars. That is, unless, you know how to start their cars.

These vehicles can suddenly become impossible to start thanks to a faulty electronic steering column lock (ESCL). Nissan dealers will gladly replace it, but that will run you $1000.

More info & videos about the Nissan ESCL defect are available over at NissanProblems.com.

It's one of the many reasons this car was named CarTalk's Turd of the Week and given our Beware of this Clunker badge. Two dubious honors.

Spent $184 at the Nissan Dealership for them to diagnosis that the passenger sensor needs to be replaced and it would be $2600 for parts and labor. WTF

Altima 2.5S 4

  • CVT transmission
  • 104,000 miles

Dealer charged $180 to diagnose the problem and quoted $3000 to fix problem. I came across the emulator solution from a You-Tube video and that solved the problem. Otherwise it would not have passed the state safety check.

Altima 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,000 miles

The airbag warning light illuminated on my dashboard, and when I took it to the dealer, I was told that the OCS system for the passenger seat had failed, and I would need to pay $2500 to replace the seat cushion. This issue appears to be related to an airbag recall involving 2013-2016 Altima, as well as other Nissan vehicles.

MY CAR WAS WORKING PERFECT. WENT TO DEALERSHIP FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND FOR NEW TIRES. THE SERVICE MEN TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE CAR AND I HAVE TO LEAVE IT FOR 24 HRS TO REPLACE A PART. I PICKED IT UP AND THE NEXT DAY THE CAR DID NOT START.

CALLED DEALERSHIP AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS. TOOK THE CAR BACK AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE STEERING WHEEL AND DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE PART THEY REPLACED. I HAVE TO PAY ALMOST 700 DOLLARS TO FIX IT.

WENT TO PICK UP THE CAR AGAIN AND THE LIGHT FOR THE TIRE AND THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WENT ON. TOOK THE CAR AGAIN AND THEY FIXED THE LIGHT FOR THE TIRE BUT THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAVE TO PAY 1800 DOLLARS TO GET THE AIR BAG FIXED. I TOLD THEM THAT CAR WAS WORKING JUST FINE UNTIL THEY STARTED WORKING ON IT. BUT STILL THEY SAID THAT I HAVE TO PAY IF I WANTED TO GET IT FIXED.

Altima Coup 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

My v6 Nissan Altima coup frequently turns off the front passenger airbag when someone of appropriate weight is sitting in the seat. I am afraid the airbag won't go off if I am involved in an accident. I have taken it into Yark Nissan in Toledo on two occasions and they state everything is working as it should. The have told me both times there isn't a problem even though I have showed them video of the malfunction occurring.
