These vehicles can suddenly become impossible to start thanks to a faulty electronic steering column lock (ESCL). Nissan dealers will gladly replace it, but that will run you $1000.

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a rattling noise coming from the front end of the vehicle without warning. On another occasion, the contact stated that the passenger's side coil spring failed. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the driver and passenger side coil springs needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 35,684 and the current mileage was 36,649. Updated 06/10/14
