I have a 2000 BMW 323I. On February 2010, one morning I work up to go to work. I tried to back my car put from my drive way but my car did not want to reverse. The car just stayed like if it was on neutral. I gave it some gas and all I head was just the engine revving, but the car would not reverse. My dad later looked in to it and found out that when the car drove forward it had no issues what so ever. It was only when the car reversed. I looked in to repairs for this issue and every where I go I get quoted in the range of 4000-6000 for a new transition. I am a college student I don't have the money to repair this issues. Specially after I found out that thousands of other BMW owners have the same issue. I strongly believe that a recall should be made for these transmissions. It is very dangerous and not safe at all. I rarely try to drive my car but in many occasions I have no choice. In one occasion where I was on a down hill street I was stuck because my car would not reverse. I had to call a tow truck to help me. I strongly encourage you to look at other testimonies from other BMW drivers on the website of noreverse.org I hope that you really look in to this issue. I am really disappointed that BMW has not taken the responsibility to take care of this matter. I hope you can help me.
I have a 2000 323I BMW with about 120K miles. I have never had a problem with the transmission before. I had driven about 40 miles on the highway and then pulled into a parking lot. I parked my car and when I tried to reverse to straighten my parking my car would not reverse. When I put it in reverse the car idled like it was in neutral. Luckily I had a friend nearby that could steer my car while I pushed it out of the parking spot. The forward gears work so I was able to go forward. Now the reverse works off and on, but I am afraid that it is going to go for good soon. I have been unable to fix the failure yet because I don't know exactly what is causing the problem (atf fluid, transmission, etc.).
I own a 2000 BMW 323ci. It has been very well maintained and just today the reverse gear went out just like that, without notice. I've been reading online and I have found out that this kind of problem should have been a recall from BMW. I am in need of help to take care of this problem since I need this car for work.
I went out to leave the office and started the car put it in reverse...nothing. It sounds like it is in neutral. Had the car diagnosed...the transmission is A5S325Z. Must be replaced.
BMW 3 series suddenly no reverse gear. No warning no anything just stops working. Seems to be a common problem with this series BMW. How is it that BMW/na will not take responsibility for this. There are no recalls but lots of people are experiencing this transmission problem. Any advice or help ?

I have an issue with my 2000 BMW 323I sedan E46, on multiple occasions the reverse all of a sudden goes out, no noise, no warning, it just doesn't clutch reverse in the clutch box. Luckily I've been only in a park idol position. I would have to push my car to back out and it's really frustrating. And from researching, my BMW 323I transmission is made by GM, who which did a recall on there transmissions and so did Cadillac because they have used the same transmissions as BMW 323I. I'm surprised BMW usa hasn't done a safety recall yet. I want to get this fix, but BMW can only swap a transmission which cost $5500.
2000 BMW 323 ci convertible. Reverse stop to work suddenly, I parked my car over the driveway yesterday them next day afternoon I went to the store to buy some groceries, I made a bad turn and I was trying to get on the road, my reverse did not work. I never feel a symptom about this problem on the car O gradual failure just stop to work, magic.
I own a 2000 BMW 323I. Today the transmission stopped going into reverse. There was no prior warning, no prior failures, no slipping, etc. I got to work, attempted to back into a parking spot, and the engine just revved - no movement. Looks like a common problem. The repair will require a new transmission and the dealership quoted me $7000. I'm glad I didn't get into a traffic situation that required me to back up to save my life or someone else's. I called the dealership in roanoke va, they said there is no recalls and I called BMW of North America and they sad the same. 800-831-1117.
Car was running fine then reverse just stopped working. Car can go forward but no longer has reverse. My mechanic diagnosed the car and I was told it has transmission failure. Also he made me aware that there are numerous of complaints and lawsuits on BMW due to this same problem. BMW should have a recall regarding this issue.
When leaving work, my car failed to go into reverse so I could pull out. I had to push the car out and took it to my mechanic who told me that this was a very common problem for this make of car. He told me that I would probably need to replace the transmission which I can not afford top do. After driving the car and making sure that I can always pull forward out of parking spots I can sometimes get the reverse transmission to engage and work properly. This seems to happen randomly and then eventually the sme problem will happen again. I have researched this online (noreverse.org) and found that this is a very common problem with these cars (2000 BMW 323I) and that BMW is aware of this and takes no responsibility. The transmissions in these cars is provided by GM, and is installed in Cadillac as well for which a recall has been issued. No recall has been issued for BMW. I feel this is a potentially major safety issue. My car has always been properly maintained and the fact that this could happen with 75,000 miles and having to replace the transmission is appalling!
2000 BMW 323I, automatic transmission, reverse just stopped working, I have read all the complaints on 2000 BMW with no reverse and I cannot afford to spend over $5000 to repair it. The transmission is a 5L40E manufactured by GM for BMW. There is a weakness in the reverse clutch housing apparently it is machined to thin for a snap ring groove and it eventually breaks. The new clutch housing is modified to be thicker so someone is aware of the issue but BMW refuses to take responsibility for this engineering failure.
The contact owns a 2000 BMW 325ci. While turning the vehicle on and shifting in reverse the vehicle would not drive in reverse when the accelerator pedal was engaged. She had to push the vehicle out of the parking space so that she could shift into drive gear. The dealer was contacted and stated that they never heard about the failure occurring on these vehicles. She stated that the vehicle would not shift in reverse gear. No repairs were made to the vehicle at this moment. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 106,000.
For no apparent reason, my 2000 BMW 323I, which had about 35,000 miles on it, suddenly could not go into reverse. I took it to a repair shop which specializes in bmws and they told me this was a common problem and that I had to replace the transmission. So I did; it cost almost $5,000.
I have a 2000 BMW 323I, got no reverse. I was on the middle of a busy street when my reverse didn't work!!!!....I had to keep going forward, I would have crashed if it wasn't for a good samaritan who slammed his brakes behind me and helped me push my car into position so I can drive forward.
I have a 2000 323I BMW and my reverse gear just randomly gave up. I cannot use the accelerator when reversing. I have seen several complaints and this is a costly issue. There should be a recall on these BMW's looks like the 1999 and 2000 models.
Started my BMW 323I 2000 one day (132,000 miles on it) and it wouldn't go in reverse. Drives forward ok, but will not go in reverse. Brought it to the BMW dealer and they want $7000 to replace the transmission.
