I purchased this Lucerne new after I'd sworn off GM products in 1987. The transmission in this Lucerne shutdown around 105,000 miles. I gave in and bought a new factory transmission and this has shut down 45,000 miles later. My father built GM transmissions at the Hydramatic Plant in Toledo, Ohio for 25-30 years. In 1987 the transmission in my Buick Regal shutdown at approx. 39,000 miles. My father told me that the transmissions in that production block were defective but management ordered them to install them anyway. There were not enough safety issues to warrant a NHTSA recall so I had to go through arbitration for partial reimbursement.

Unlike my father I'm not a mechanic, but I recognize the exceptional odds of two automatic transmissions failing in less than 200,000 miles. Something is wrong with this transmission design. My father is deceased now, but were he alive I wonder what he would say knowing that I came back to the GM family for this to be the result. It seems that GM is back to its old tricks of being unaccountable for its production errors. I forgave the ignition problems but this is too much. I want this problem corrected. Until then I'm passing on this info to all of my extended family members. I am a public school teacher and retired military. I'll also pass it onto all of my military active and veterans, and school teachers nationwide and internationally. I will start with my family newsletter and website that reaches more than 300 family members.

I supported the govt bailout of General Motors because I recognized that many of my family members and friends that I grew up with in Toledo, Ohio ; Michigan etc were affected. But if GM is making faulty products, I can't support them.
