CarComplaints.com Notes: It didn't take long for the cladding to fade, discolor, and in some cases crack. Cladding is the protective plastic piece that runs along the outside of vehicles, and exposure to both heat and UV rays give the Avalanche's cladding a chalky, faded appearance.

Owners have said the problem is especially bad on the panels near the cargo bed. Eventually, GM agreed to a one-time treatment of ArmorDillo, a protective treatment similar to what you find in any auto shop. Unfortunately, that would only help for 6 months (on average).

Eventually, GM offered another coating solution for owners within the 3 year / 36,000 mile original warranty under TSB:04-08-111-001C.

Quoted 250 in the phone - cost 450 when picked up. 2 weeks later same problem. They would not fix it again. Would cost me again. Still broke.

Avalanche LT 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

The plastic tailgate latch on my 2005 Avalanche popped off while I was trying to unlatch it. I had to take it to a body shop immediately because I couldn't open it to get to the cargo box. All the latches on the doors are metal. Why does GM put a plastic latch on the tailgate???

Avalanche 1500 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

This is my second Avalanche and I had the same problem with the first one. They also have a vibration with the exhaust systems deflectors that sounds like a moan when you are at certain speeds. I can see why Chevy is about to go under as they do not fix any problems and the owners get stuck with it. I am not going to pay to have either one fixed. I will tie the tail gate up with baler twine and put a sticker on it "Made in the USA" just before I go buy a Toyota
